Breaking NYT: RNC to *require* their presidential nominee to *skip debates*

Currently behind paywall, but I presume this will eventually leak out:

Quote

The Republican National Committee is preparing to change its rules to require presidential candidates seeking the party’s nomination to sign a pledge to not participate in any debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates.

Republican committee officials alerted the debate commission to their plans in a letter sent on Thursday, a copy of which was obtained by The New York Times.

Why? Well, you know why; Trump and his Trumpies think they must be unfair, because how poorly their COVID-infected candidate came across. However, can’t say that out loud, so…

Quote

The nonprofit commission, founded by the two parties in 1987 to codify the debates as a permanent part of presidential elections, describes itself as nonpartisan. But Republicans have complained for nearly a decade that its processes favor the Democrats…

It’s a bipartisan commission. Exactly how is this bipartisan commission favoring the Dems?

Quote

Republicans have long complained about how the commission handles debates, going back to the 2012 campaign, when Senator Mitt Romney of Utah was the Republican nominee against the incumbent Democrat, President Barack Obama. The moderator of the town hall-style debate, Candy Crowley, then with CNN, fact checked Mr. Romney in real time about a claim he made about Mr. Obama, prompting an outcry from conservatives.

Really? Must have been really slanted, huh? To the wayback machine:

Quote

ROMNEY: I – I think interesting the president just said something which – which is that on the day after the attack he went into the Rose Garden and said that this was an act of terror.

OBAMA: That’s what I said.

ROMNEY: You said in the Rose Garden the day after the attack, it was an act of terror. It was not a spontaneous demonstration, is that what you’re saying?

OBAMA: Please proceed governor.

ROMNEY: I want to make sure we get that for the record because it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi an act of terror.

OBAMA: Get the transcript.

CROWLEY: It – it – it – he did in fact, sir.

That’s it. Just confirming that Obama actually said what he said, in front of the press(!), repeatedly. Embarrassing? Sure. Romney got caught in a(nother) lie about Benghazi that the GOP was pushing at the time, that Obama didn’t and wouldn’t call it a terrorist attack. And Obama knew that he had, as did Crowley. And she was supposed to just go along with the lie?

Anyway, I think the real reason is this:

Quote

Mr. Trump’s adviser, Rudolph W. Giuliani, argued with the commission at the second debate with Mrs. Clinton, when he tried to seat women who had accused Bill Clinton of sexual misconduct near the stage. Mr. Trump has also complained about moderators repeatedly, insisting that both the former Fox News anchor Chris Wallace and the NBC News reporter Kristen Welker were biased against him.

RollingEyesSmiley5

The truth is not the GOP’s friend. Better stick to where they can make @#$%& up with impunity.

Pres. Trump is going to become more deranged by the next election so they have nothing to lose and everything to gain by not participating.

That could work in Biden's favor in 2024.

And if they do like they did in the 2020 election, they won't have a party platform to run on other than "if Trump wants something at one particular moment, we want it". If so, there would be no debates and no platform. What a joke.

and maddeningly enough - it might not hurt them.

I've read that the commission deals directly with the candidates - not the parties and that this is just a shot over the bow stating that if Trump is the nom, don't expect to see him at the debates because he will not do any forum these days where others are allowed to challenge him.

It has worked for him... he blathers on with lie after lie and it takes fact checkers days to counter every point, but if someone is interrupting him and questioning everything he says, he looks much weaker.

In other news that is not worth a separate topic:

Graham says he won’t support McConnell for GOP leader unless he has ‘working relationship’ with Trump

that's a pretty big deal - afaik, that's the first repub senator to announce that he won't support McConnell. Will the dam break open now?

I don't know how Ted Cruz and Graham don't just collapse into puddles on the floor.

So that they can support someone who blindly follows Trump? Be careful what you wish for.

I wasn't wishing... just commenting. McConnell is a clever, vicious opponent, but he has shown signs of reason when it comes to Trump. McC would be preferable to any Trump stooge imo...

Yeah, you’ll get the bad qualities of both.
