Peter Frampton and Barry Manilow have joined Neil Young. Spotify responded to boycott by not allowing cancellations.

While their stock value took somewhat of a plunge.

This is just classic hypocrisy-do these people know their Constitution? Apparently not. And as a new(ish) American citizen, Young should read it and understand that free speech means that he can't stop it just because he doesn't agree or approve of what's being said, and being a "Canarican" doesn't change that.

Don't like Rogan? Don't listen to him! Hey! There's a concept!

Think Rogan spouts misinformation? An awful lot of that coming from everywhere; from all corners. But as long as he isn't telling people to take cyanide then he has a right to say it.

Stop the hypocrisy. And move this to the Other Side...

"Free speech" means that the government can't suppress certain types of expression.

This is a conflict between people providing products and a commercial enterprise providing a service that those people do not wish to participate in or be associated with.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with "free speech."

It boils down to the same thing, especially in the era of "cancel culture" and "wokeness". Young, et al, want to bring free speech issues into the commercial world.

No.

They want to bring ethics to American commerce.

I doubt that Spotify is thinking about the Constitution — just the bottom line. It could kick off the guy for spreading lies just like twitter did to the former guy. Private companies make the rules on who can use their platform. Let’s go Joni!

The “speech” at play here is a musical artist taking a stand against a wrong by pulling a product they own or control from a venue that has no other claim to it. Spotify is free to align themselves with an idiot that’s disseminating a socially harmful message, however, that doesn’t mean either they or the idiot in question are insulated from the repercussions of said idiocy. Play stupid games and find out.

How in the world does this rise to a Constitutional issue?

Spotify loses $4 billion in market value following Neil Young controversy

Curious... Has Rogan responded to any of this? I never knew he was so discrete.

Obviously it doesn’t. Unless Neil Young has suddenly become president.

It doesn't. Some posters here are woefully uninformed about the First Amendment which states (emphasis mine):

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Congress or any form of the government is not in this dog fight. No law has been passed that Rogan can't spread his crap. However, Spotify as a non-governmental business enterprise has the power to stop disinformation from being spread on their platform. Youtube, Meta, and Twitter have already done so. This outcry is asking Spotify to set a similar redline.

It really is rather easy ---

Rogan can say/believe whatever he likes
Spotify can give a platform to Rogan if it so chooses and Rogan agrees
Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and any other artist can deny Spotify the right to use their product if they own the rights to it.
Listeners can listen or not listen as they choose.
Investors may buy or sell company stock for any reason.

At no time is any government agency involved nor any constitutional issue raised. Everything is a matter of personal choice.

Dp - you had a basic misunderstanding of Young's position.

He was telling Spotify that if you're going to carry Rogen, you can't have Young. He did not tell Spotify to remove Rogen's material. He only has stated that he wants no part of supporting Rogen by having his music support the venue that supports Rogen and that is his right.

Free Speech?

News people are regularly sacked for spewing lies, misinformation.

wtf are you folks talking about?

DP..huh? you're a bit off center

If you slander someone you can be held accountable.

Joe Rogan is a major mouthpiece for dis/misinformation..one of THE most
powerful and basic tools used to manipulate large groups of people and to pit people against each other..the Nazis did it to the Jewish people and effectively isolated them and then?..you know the rest..The Russians are doing it as we speak.

It is a sinister mode, what Rogan does

..Free speech is not an absolute, and Joe Rogan
violates the limits of free speech regularly.

I hope Spotify goes down the tubes on this..@#$%& them. Companies DO have a social responsibility.

Spotify’s goal is to capture the podcast market. This Rogan guy has a listener base of 11 million. For Spotify, the issue is merely about money, freedom of speech only factors into it effecting their bottom line.

270 doctors, healthcare professionals and educators have petitioned Spotify to stop broadcasting lies and disinformation after one knucklehead got on Rogan’s show and claimed mass hypnosis was being used to get people to wear masks.

Young and Mitchell have always been musician activists that attempted to take action in situations they feel strongly about, and as musicians/ songwriters do so with their music. What’s sad to me is the amount of smug mockery they are getting from young listeners that appear to be too dumb or too disengaged to grasp the full situation.

it's certainly sad, but I can understand. When I was 17, I don't think I would have taken seriously a similar protest from, say... Glenn Miller or Doris Day. I would wonder why they thought their opinions were relevant in 1978 and put on another Led Zeppelin LP loud.

hal, I think you make a valid point. The majority of condescending comments I read are from people that claim they don’t know who either artist is or who claim they never listen to their music if they do know who they are. There’s a heavy ok boomer attitude coming across from them.

Guess Neil has a bit more pull than Doris did. (Of course… It doesn’t actually do anything, but it’s a start.)

"Many of the things that we thought of as misinformation just a short while ago are now accepted as fact," Rogan claimed.

Yes, of course.

I wonder if he sees the irony of that double edged sword.
