Putin isn't going to live forever and I doubt some other Russian will possess his level of skill and ability.

However,

If he doesn't get a suitable outcome with this war, I think this Ukraine event could be a mere footnote to an impending instability in Eastern Europe and beyond. If the Russian people do indeed gather the nerve, there's no telling what forces will try to game it for power.

I appreciate that Ukraine uses UCLA's colors.

Anybody who takes Putin's place will only do so with the approval of the same oligarchs who rose from the ashes in the 1990s. They aren't interested in revolution.

I can’t challenge that argument. Unfortunately the oligarchs are somewhat responsible too for keeping the average Russian poor, and hence some of the impetus for Putin’s popularity. Putin’s bravado gives the suffering Russian people something to look forward to.
