In Missouri it might be against the law to cross the state line for an abortion.

"An unusual new provision, introduced by state Rep. Mary Elizabeth Coleman (R), would allow private citizens to sue anyone who helps a Missouri resident obtain an abortion out of state, using the novel legal strategy behind the restrictive law in Texas that since September has banned abortions in that state after six weeks of pregnancy.

These people are truly repulsive, sure. But set aside any outrage for a minute. And so I have to ask my conservative friends, whatever your hot-button issue may be is it truly worth it to vote against the next Democrat?

My feeling is that Democrats could be unilaterally elected from now until who-knows-when, and America as a whole would not be "liberal" in any reliable way. And so I continue to not understand the risk there, sorry.

You're apparently skipping a steady diet of Fox News.

Regan’s three daughters urged voters not to elect him to office in a viral tweet during his 2020 bid for the state House.

“If you’re in Michigan and 18+ pls for the love of god do not vote for my dad for state rep. Tell everyone,” Stephanie Regan wrote on Twitter.

Paul Gaspar's siblings and other family members urged the same thing, today he's called the Honorable US Congressman Paul Gaspar.

What’s convenient for Republican voters is that these people are somehow just one-offs that do not and could not impact them, so it doesn’t matter.

It’s just a series of coincidental behaviors, so let’s talk about how Democrats are imperfect instead.

The trouble with #whataboutism is that by definition it’s off-topic.

"Coleman has also worked for the Thomas More Society, an anti-abortion law firm."

"The Thomas More Society is a conservative law firm... the group has been engaged in many 'culture war' issues, promoting its anti-abortion and anti-same-sex marriage beliefs through litigation. The society filed cases as part of Donald Trump's failed attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, in which Trump was defeated."

A wee bit off the thread, but I am continually stunned by what Republican voters will hold their nose over and still pull the lever for the generic Republican candidate.

Latest jarring example: Bill Barr, currently on a tour for his book One Damn Thing After Another, confirming that yes indeed, the Trump administration really was as bad as we thought, threatening the foundations of American democracy itself:

Quote

Former Attorney General Bill Barr has been called “lazy” and “cowardly” by former President Donald Trump, while Barr has described Trump as “off the rails” and called his push to discredit the 2020 election “a farce.”

Yet despite the ugly back and forth between the two, Barr said on TODAY Monday that he would still vote for Trump in the 2024 presidential election if Trump becomes the Republican nominee.

WTF? In God’s name, why?

Well, because Democrats are dangerous.

Well, because Democrats are dangerous.

I wish we had numbers on how many people would vote for Putin over an unspecified democrat.

It's not those numbers I wish for... it's a process to deprogram en masse anyone indicating they would prefer a KGPB-lepto-crat or knee jerk neofascist talk radio fake evangelicals I wish we had a handle on.

For many I think it's a willingness to never take it seriously until it lands on their doorstep. Calling things "ridiculous" or "a farce" could easily be interpreted as instead, merely annoying or inconvenient.

You don't get people like Barr or the rest of them to engage in any sort of meaningful conversation about democracy. All of that instantly becomes a misplaced analogy here, or a theoretical construct there, but ya know, not an actual thing.
