If Russia uses nukes in Ukraine, should the USA Respond?

It woke me up.

President Biden's emergency address to the nation:

"Half an hour ago, A Russian nuclear weapon destroyed Kyiv. This is a red line our nation cannot countenance. Accordingly 5 minutes before this address, An American nuclear missile has destroyed the Russian port facilities at Vladivostok, in the Russian Far East. All our forces on highest alert now.

May God Bless our Nation and the World"

fade to black, News cuts in:

"Russian President Vladimir Putin's body has just been found, dead of an apparent 'suicide'. Vice President Blahblahblahsky has declared a ceasefire in Ukraine and a period of mourning."

I hate it when I wake up scared.

My middle of the night wake up call had Putin damaging any number of those nuclear power plants allowing radiation to spread over large parts of Ukrainian farmland. It would then travel around the world. No nukes fired off.

Don't worry. I doubt there will be just ONE missile used by both sides.

You won't wake at all.

Why settle for vague bad dreams?

Watch these, then you'll REALLY have bad dreams.

(All three are excellent, btw ... I'd have to argue that the last one is actually the best of the three though.)

And as for your poll, in what way do you mean "respond" ? Respond can mean lots of things, ranging from a full-on nuclear response, to a black-ops assassination of one particular individual. devil smiley

Nukes is off the table for Russia. That immediately makes it a World War. One that Russia would royally pay for immediately within minutes. Putin would be assassinated in short order.

In the big scheme Russia and China could be in the throes of shifting the world order. But it would have to be conventional because neither country would survive nuclear options.

Russia is just going to keep ratcheting up the destruction to goad the US directly into the fray. The US isn't going to bite, despite many ignorant US citizens desperately wanting us to.

Y'all need to fire up the WOPR and game this thing out.

The first nuke is an abomination, the second one is armageddon.

Russia has absolutely no need to use nukes to overrun Ukraine.

I’ve read that though it was perhaps expedient the US had no need to nuke Japan either.

To date, Russia's (read Putin's) actions haven't been predicated on need, they've been based on perceived ability and want.

The United States? No. NATO, maybe.

My understanding is that Russia, as well as others, are now days equipped with tactical or strategic (I’m still not clear in which is which) arms that fall a shade closer to ‘conventional’ weapons than planet killers.

If that is in fact correct, that makes for a much more complicated discussion.

Try to limit the situation to “only” opening the door to some kind of normalization of these supposed non-doomsday categories of weapons? Or is that just a distinction without any practical difference?

Or conversely, try to slam the door shut with TOTAL scorched earth maximum retaliation on every front, nuclear, cyber, even biological and chemical. In effect setting the price of even dipping a toe in such waters simply nothing less than being scrubbed from the face of the earth?

Is there any middle ground?

Given the way the board is set up, my assumption would be decions have already been made. The boulders have cast their ballots, and it’s too late for us pebbles to vote on the avalanche.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Apples to oranges.
Japan's position and circumstances in the world of 1945 are nowhere the same as the 2022 situation in the Ukraine.
