...and so it begins...

I like this artwork, but it lacks the exclamation point at the point of impact

If Ted Cruz had punched Trump after Trump's insult, Hillary would be in her second term already.

I just watched it. I've never been a big Will Smith fan, even less one now. Stood up there crying after he won his not-well deserved Oscar talking about how he's here to love people. On an international stage "protecting" his wife from something she didn't need protecting from?

Afterwards I watched Questlove's very heartfelt acceptance of his well-deserved Oscar and Will Smith just crapped all over it.

I feel bad for Questlove - I didn't even know that was the award being presented. I loved his movie - it really deserved this award - it was so good in so many ways.

I did some IT work for Young Willard back in his original Hancock days, but the NDA from that relationship precludes me from discussing any explosive temperament traits he may or may not have exhibited during that time.

I wonder who's gonna maintain the rights to that slap? Not that either Young Willard or Young(er) Chris needs the money, so I'm thinking The Slap oughta be monetized and put towards a good cause.... like getting an industrial sized wood chipper to have a Fargo Style Wood Chipper Party in Moscow that turns Pootie and the Oligarchs into mulch for the Russian Cherry and Apple Trees in the area.

Maybe even add the profits from Hancock 2 to the cause, too.... Seriously, though, if anyone was gonna slap Young(er) Chris for a "G.I. Jane" joke, it shoulda been Demi Moore, cuz clearly the $11M she got for that pic wasn't enough to deserve add'l insults in front of a worldwide audience..... Now, if Young(er) Chris had said "G.I. Jada" instead of "G.I. Jane," I might've been more understanding of Young Willard's wrath.

If anyone was gonna get bitch slapped like that last night, it shoulda been Justin Bieber, Just Because *HE* always needs a good slappin'....

If anyone would have slapped DJT after he insulted them with some stupid insensitive name, his face would no longer be orange, but red, from the thousands of face slappings.

Sorry, folks, but I’m sympathetic to Will Smith on this one. Off the cuff jokes about a medical condition that someone has struggled with - not cool. Not funny.

Do that in front of their spouse. Get what’s coming to you.

So you think a violent assault is the answer? And no consequences? The thug should have been escorted out of the venue and arrested. You or I would have, why not the thug?

Sorry, Chris Rock didn't do anything wrong. He was being Chris Rock, which is what he was paid to do.

We're NOT talking cancer or mental retardation here. It's hair loss. Get over it. Jumping to actual violence for a verbal barb is MUCH worse than a hair loss joke regardless of how innapropriate or in poor taste said "joke" might be. boink smiley

Well done, Kareem. Said as eloquently as anything I've read about the incident assault.

What I find troubling, though, are many of the Comments.

Will Smith Did a Bad, Bad Thing

Kareem’s writing has been a shining light for not just the Black community, but the intellectual community overall.

But…

…I agree with him. After a fashion.

Except, I don’t.

The Smith/Rock dust up has quickly become far and away intellectually over bedazzled.
  • Smith has with a single blow normalized violence.
  • He has denigrated women.
  • He has brought the Black community into disrepute.
  • He weaves a web with the language of the abuser.
  • He has mesmerized the legions of impressionable young Will Smith devotees into his scurrilous ways.

All fine. In theory.

But theory, is theory. In the haste to justifiably condemn the act, proportion is being lost and bare ripples confused with tsunamis.

A guy said something definitely dumb and somewhere between putting his foot in his mouth and extremely nasty. The spouse of the target flipped out and, in the finest tradition of the 18th century gentleman, gave the bounder a bit of a thrashing (or, as Rock described in 21st century vernacular, ‘slapped the chit’ out of him. He then tacked on a couple of harsh rejoinders, cautioning the cad to refrain from further trespass.

We, quite rightly, frown on such false gallantry these days for more than a few good reasons, and excoriation is certainly due. But no, Dr. King’s legacy has not been laid to waste. Generations have not been sent hurtling down an unbreakable path of misogyny and fisticuffs.

Two fairly well known dudes had beef on (inter)national television. At least one of them was a clown for doing so.

But the republic shall stand. Punishment? A bit tricky. Rescinding Smith’s Oscar is problematic in the extreme until Harvey Weinstein gets his pulled for over two decades of actual criminal assault on women in the industry.

A ban from the ceremony for some period of time? Maybe with mandated community service of some kind before readmittance? Some measured response shouldn’t be impossible to come up with.

Would have been more entertaining had Gervais been hosting with Jada herself as the respondent.

'Cause you know Ricky would have seen her coming so he'd take off running.

Huge ratings boost!

I don't think I've seen anything more STUPID than what Will did.

Here's this guy on the precipice of winning the greatest honor that can be awarded to an actor. During the greatest of all award shows, beamed around the globe. This is a man of unprecedented success, wealth and privilege. I don't think a reaction was warranted at all.

Because this was not about Will's wife even slightly. So him even reacting a little bit was an overreaction. He's addicted to being influential. That's all his social media is about.

This was also the very first time the Academy Awards would be produced by a Black Person (Will Packer), which he absolutely ruined with his selfishness.

These people going on about him “protecting his woman,’ makes me sick. He’s such a protector of Black women, let’s see him slap Ted Cruz, or Josh Hawley, or Lindsey Graham for disrespecting Judge Brown Jackson next time he’s in DC.

And the Academy has released the fact that they told Will Smith to LEAVE but, Smith refused. At that point, the Academy should have called for Security to escort Will Smith OFF the property. Failing to do that and, knowing he was about to be named Best Actor, that Oscar presentation should have been passed over until such time as the Academy could regain control of a very hairy situation. boink smiley

Not too surprisingly, things are getting murky. One source even saying the Oscar producer Will Packer requested Smith stay.

TMZ is reporting Packer did personally request Smith stay, Good Morning America reports that Packer, “… told "GMA" that he did not speak with Smith directly the night of the Oscars.”

Deadline

”Deadline hears that a pair of Oscar heavyweights — Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson — had a discussion with Smith’s rep, bouncing around the idea of the then-pending King Richard Best Actor winner departing the Dolby Theatre. Smith’s rep approached the actor with the suggestion, and he reportedly told her, according to a well-placed source that night, “I want to make this right, I want to stay and apologize.

As more details come out, as more perspectives are being thrown into the hat, the role of Oscar telecast producer Will Packer in all of this seems to be murkier. We know for a fact that Packer did speak to Smith after the incident with Rock, as did Denzel Washington, Tyler Perry and Bradley Cooper. As for what the actual content of that conversation was, it seems there are many POVs on what went down in the fog of war. One source tells us that Packer told Smith to stay, not leave.

Enough!

It's million dollar egos against other million dollar egos and marketing potential for creating more millions of dollars and the attendant egos.

It would be best if this forum never revisited the subject, let Hollywood and Sports egos stay where they belong, in this case that would appear to be Chatsworth, California.

People have an interest, and it skims some more than cotton candy issues like the privileges wealth, celebrity culture, even tangentially the reverberations of the #metoo movement.

If discussed, best be with as accurate information as available. Not interested? You can’t lose, if you don’t click .
