He's waiting to see how much Musk will offer him to return, and pay him monthly based on number of followers. He's not going to tweet for "free".

Or maybe Musk will have to make an acquisition of the Truth platform as part of the deal.

Wondering how this will impact the normal user experience, if at all.

Why was this the best thing to do with $44B?

Seems like he is trying to one-up his arch enemy, BIll Gates.

For 1% of the money, I would have been happy to troll him on the platform of his choice.

Waiting for the EU to shut this down over lack of moderation. Elon may not care.

I can’t imagine he would destroy it. He uses Twitter effectively as SpaceX and Tesla’s PR department, he won’t destroy that.

Yeah, I don't think he wants to destroy it, rather he wants to set it "free" to allow any kind of speech no matter how dangerous that speech is.

Yeah, I don't think he wants to destroy it, rather he wants to set it "free" to allow any kind of speech no matter how dangerous that speech is.

That would effectively destroy it as well, since it would render the platform unusable. He is smart enough to at least realize that.

I imagine that he won't allow certain clearly illegal postings like child pornography or sex trafficking of minors, but I'll bet he's going to loosen up the standards a lot. I guess we'll see whether or not the substantial loosening of standards destroys it. It's also possible he may see it falling apart because of too loose standards and tighten things up a bunch more than he intended when he bought it. Admittedly I'm just speculating here based on his past comments, though.

I'm surprised at how few have drawn a connection between Elon Musk's Twitter acquisition and the ongoing litigation against him for tweeting from both shareholders damaged by the infamous "Funding secured" and the SEC for that and various other market-impacting statements that he has made.

Mark Cuban gets at least part of it: [twitter.com]

I don't think even he is making the full leap, though. Elon will take this "first amendment right to tweet" all the way to the Supreme Court, and he will keep tweeting to dissemble the SEC's case since he owns the platform no one will be able to shut him down.

It's an interesting way to play with $46 billion. And a total waste of his resources when that money could have been used instead to accelerate his Moon and Mars ambitions. Of course, the way the street works, I'm sure he couldn't secure funding in the same way despite the obviously immeasurably greater benefit of colonizing and acquiring resources off planet. But then, maybe the gig on that is coming up as it's become obvious that no such colony is feasible in the next 20-50 years - an outpost maybe, for a bunch of one way trips... a colony returns resources to its sponsors.

He's not really spending his own money. Twitter has value apart from him, he will transfer the debt to the company.

My brother suggested initially that he was trolling the SEC as well also, but that he wasn’t serious on buying Twitter itself or following through on the threat.

The fact that he owns Twitter has no bearing on whether his tweet violates stock trading law. He needs to buy the FEC (or a couple of Senators.)

It does absolutely have bearing if he a) relocated twitter's "headquarters" outside the United States and b) refuses to comply with SEC orders about his forward looking statements regarding his various lines of business. Moreover as owner he can legitimately make the statement that his freedom of speech is being muzzled... whereas if he does not own twitter and they block his tweets for being somehow unlawful (particularly with regards to the regulated and monitored speech around forward looking statements impacting company financials and stock valuations) he doesn't have much leg to stand on. Twitter's a private platform not a public conveyance and can decide whom to censor at their sole discretion (within the confines of the laws governing them.)

Now if Musk can buy the FEC (Federal Election Commission) then we are all really in trouble.

Hm... are those offshore oil platforms SpaceX bought for purposes of launching / landing Starship on Super Heavy far enough offshore to be in international waters? If so, guess where Twitter's new headquarters will be?

To be fair, blocking someone does not remove their freedom to say what they want. It just means you don't have to see it.
Banning cuts them off entirely, it's a big difference.
(I cannot stand Elon Musk, I'm just pointing this out because it's a common refrain).

Still, it's a good moment to call Musk a POS. Because he is.

He's not a nice guy, but he's not a dumbhead. Maybe he's making a mistake, but it won't matter to him. And maybe it will work out well for him.

Nobody thinks he's dumb. But his diving into politics (which is why he bought Twitter) isn't any different than Kanye West running for president is out of his element. He helped peel away young Black male votes from Stacy Abrams (in my opinion). Musk isn't even from from here.

For him to think we have a freedom of speech problem here (of all places in the world) of a magnitude that warrants him putting much more vital (to the world, not just him) endeavors of his (Tesla & SpaceX) at truly great risk, for really the first time….I just don’t buy it (the freedom of speech reason). If that’s what he’s doing, what is he doing building cars in China? Like kj says, I sure hope Musk knows what he’s doing, and that all this turns out well.

“Investors speculating over whether Elon Musk will complete his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) sent the social media company's shares on Wednesday to their lowest level since the deal was announced two days ago.”

“Traders fretted that Musk may not have enough money sitting around to fund his $21 billion cash contribution and could decide against selling some of his Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) shares to come up with it.”

“Tesla shares fell more than 12% on Tuesday, wiping out $126 billion in value, amid concerns Musk will have to sell shares in the electric car maker to pay for the $21 billion equity check in the Twitter deal.”

There's a good chance that Musk is going to get bored with the idea, having proven he could do it if he wanted to, honestly what does he care at this point?
