Interesting. I've discussed sialic acids with students when I've taught Cell Bio. But I'm wary about the claim that the virus could not mutate to select against their approach. If the sialic acids are binding to the spike protein, there could be mutations in the spike protein which don't bind these particular sialic acids as well.
