I prefer "Succumbed to Depression after a long illness". Those of us who struggle with conditions like Depression can understand.

Honestly I dont think anyone really needs to know the specifics.

We do need to know and understand the toll that easy access to guns takes on our country. Suicide is a big one. Suicide attempts with firearms tend to be successful, where other methods like overdosing are much less so.
People struggling with depression amd suicidal thoughts should not have access to a firearm. Loved ones should make sure of this for the person's safety.

IIRC, she struggled with health issues (rheumatoid arthritis?) for a long time.

It only ran because it's a show biz story. Many people were acquainted with her and her family and feel a connection.

How about the number of women recently who've been killing their children? Sorry, didn't know them. Story evaporates immediately.

Steve, your engaging in an ineffective and arrogant form of demanding fealty to your version of some version of “real” compassion or humanity.

This passive aggressive castigation is utterly hollow though because it consists simply of of you impotently stamping your feet with what I assume you think are example after example of tragedies we should be paying as much or more attention to as the subject being discussed.

The disconnect is that we are already aware of such tragedies. We do ache on the deepest levels for the victims. You’re ‘shining a light’ on what’s already lit.

If you want to engage in examination and discussion, examine and discuss. Intelligently. Find an example and give us your thoughts on the who/what/when/where/why of it. I’ve no doubt you’re intelligent enough; no doubt you’d have some interesting things to say.

For instance, the Forest Hills murderer who knifed his victim over 50 times dumped the body at a location I pass all the time. It's horrifying. But there is little public notice in any way. Nary a flower on the spot. Not a mention anywhere (except one followup story).

My concern is how we live our lives through media. The political consequences of this are with us more and more.

If someone i know dies I might mention it to someone acquainted with them but not to someone who didn’t know them at all. Celebrities are “known” by a lot of people and Judd’s music impacted their lives. the media cover stories that have meaning for their readers even though that may not include you, Steve.

There is someone (or maybe a group) who make the decisions on what you see. I've seen decades of people who edit the news. Some of the stories they decide to play are based on the criteria you mentioned. The others are 'real' news that actually affect the way you live and the course of our society and world. Crime, celebrity...human interest are just there to 'sell papers'. As a media sales person, the importance of curating your programming is important in forming an audience to make your sale to advertisers.

If you doubt me, just consider the decisions that go into making Fox News. They are in another galaxy, but they corral those crazy viewers like crazy. (This crosses over into political power, which is another end of the game. The press battles and lies have been raging since the early days of America. Only now they've gotten worse.)


One of the projects that i will probably never around to is a 'news' feed consisting of 'human interest and crime' newspaper stories from over 100 years ago. With a few details changed, most people wouldn't even notice the difference.

A possibility.

As difficult as sharing that information might be, she might also be emphasizing that it wasn't merely a gun, but a weapon, a firearm.

Maybe she's questioning it's presence and access in a way the very common, ubiquitous 'gun' or 'gunshot'.

Or maybe those two words make the sharing more painful for her, and weapon and firearm are less graphic to her.


But my question is why would her choice of words be an issue, enough to mention, to question.

It's her mother, her interview, her perspective, her pain, her words.

She or they needn't meet anyone's approval.
