Florida (aka DeathSantis) threatens Special Olympics with $27-million fine.

The USA Special Olympics lifted its COVID-19 vaccine requirement for athletes on June 2 after the state of Florida threatened to fine the organization $27.5 million for a violation of state law, according to a letter obtained by ABC News.

The organization had barred unvaccinated athletes from competing in the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando this weekend. This was to protect participants from infection as many have underlying health issues that could cause serious illness or death.

That did not matter to the state which told the Special Olympics that it would face 5,500 fines of $5,000 unless the Special Olympics pulled its vaccine mandate, per the letter. The organization had no choice but to comply or face bankruptcy.

I wish they would have stood up to the state, just say fine away, then explain to the nation why they are forcing Special Olympics to shut down. Somebody needs to stand up to this idiocy.

How about just moving future games to a less hostile environment?

DeSantis wants to take on Trump in the primaries. Or better yet, step in for Trump after he (please god) gets indicted for crimes.

This is all because people wouldn't vote for Hillary because of all sorts of stupid reasons. So now no more abortions, and GOP politicians are competing to see who can be the biggest fascist, and we can't have anything nice because the Senate Republicans will die before they let the Democrats get one tiny bill passed. Empowering Trump was a virus and it just keeps spreading.

So sad, so true.

One guy I knew, a superficially decent guy, went near berserk when I mentioned being pro-Hillary.

No doubt being a Dem and a woman were unspoken fuel, as well.

He moved to NV in 2020/2021, and we haven't spoken since the move.

I suspect he hasn't mellowed.

Companies cannot require people to be vaccinated. Special Olympics is no exception.

It’s another example of parochial myopia. Endemic amongst the MAGAts.

Actually, they can. My previous employer asked every couple of years to document my vaccination/immune status with regards to tetanus, diptheria, pertussis, tuberculosis, mumps, measles, german measles, hepatitis B, and perhaps a couple more I’ve maybe forgotten. If any were out of date, I had to get them up to date

I suppose I could have made up some bogus religious objection, but instead I decided to be an adult and comply, because it was important for my job and for the people I interacted with.

In other words, not being a dick.

DeSantis, who was co-chair of the Special Olympics in Florida, said he couldn’t believe they were “going after” the Special Olympics.

No, not the threatened $27M fine - he was referring to the Special Olympics organization itself, for trying to protect the participants, some of whom are immunocompromised.

What an ass.

In Florida?

Could have been been in Florida, at least until Desantis politicized public health last year.

It's amazing how the "small government" people are grooving on the authoritarian aims of DeathSentence.
