Tell me again how 'good guys with guns' keep us all safe ?

"CLEVELAND — A Cleveland police officer claims another officer panicked and "blindly" shot her when they confronted a man standing in a boarding house bathroom with a gun, according to a federal lawsuit.

Jennifer Kilnapp's lawsuit, filed last week, said her rookie partner in July 2020, Bailey Gannon, fled down the stairs after opening the second-floor bathroom door without a warning, where a man stood with a handgun at his side, pointed at the floor.

Gannon "blindly" fired a shot from over his head as he retreated and shot Kilnapp, who was standing near the top of the stairs, according to the lawsuit.

The bullet "ripped through her forearm before fragmenting in her bicep and chest, lodging near her spine," according to the lawsuit. "She believed she was going to die.""

Well to be fair, he was a rookie. His injured partner will get a good settlement from Cleveland PD.

Despite the highly editorialized subject line, going up against an armed criminal isn't for the timid.

Reading the article, I hope she gets a huge settlement, as her department didn't do any her justice.

Disciplining her for not activating her body cam, yet not disciplining him for what must have been a violation(s) of department policy, and if not, basic firearm safety is all kinds of wrong.

It's ok, kid, first day jitters, it happens.

And they withheld information about the shooting from her.

CPD should 'encourage' him to seek other employment, perhaps in the food industry.

From the article, he doesn't seem to me to be cut out for the job.

He injured is partner, very bad.

He may have lied about what happened, and if true, that should be enough for termination.

He may have panicked enough that he believed the suspect was pointing his weapon, which goes back to not being cut out for the job.


Truth be told, she absolutely should have had her cam activated, but she's the only one disciplined?

We didn't have them back in my day, but I tell everybody the body cam is your friend and if you don't think it is, maybe you've got some work to do.

One local agency is supposed to have automatic activation when a cop's weapon is drawn.

That's a start.

Anyone who thinks the police officers are proficient with their firearms is delusional. One just needs to research the amount of shots they take versus the number of hits. Or look at how many negligent discharges they have had. Or how many have accidentally shot themselves or others. Most of them have a blatant disregard for the cardinal rules of safely handling firearms.

I have first hand confirmation of these issues from friends who conduct firearms training for law enforcement. They are horrified with what they see.

I have first hand experience that you and/or your source are full of crap.

Nobody can speak for everybody.

Let's hope your 'friends who conduct firearms training for law enforcement' are excellent at their job, and not just marking time.

News flash, prior firearms proficiency is not a metric I've seen from any cop in any department, and I've know a ton.

Neither is knowledge of the state's vehicle code and penal code.

That's something that'd taught at the academy and reenforced with experience.

Firearms proficiency is a perusable skill, and training needs to be ongoing and mandatory.

Few PDs and SO get that kind of budget, and in particular, get community support for that training.

With few exceptions, all y'all like to tar with a very wide brush.

While there are a lot of cops who lack proficiency with their jobs and/or firearms, there are still magnitudes more who do a great job every day, often against some ugly odds.

That seldom makes news, and for me, I was good with that.

Most seek no more reward than the job done to the best of their ability, and some citizen being the better for their efforts.

Yet pinheads want every single cop to bear the weight of bad performance of others, but wouldn't expect the same of their family doctor, surgeon, contractor, or any other number of 'highly trained professionals'.

I agree there is need for reform in a lot of aspects of police work, though mostly not to the degree of anti-police zealots.

One can bet that improved mandatory firearms training ever came up in those demands.
