Odd sign for the current times of record low unemployment…

Actually I think it makes more sense today. We need people to get off the couch and go to work. It’s low unemployment because people don’t want to work. They just dream.

If you aren't looking/applying for a job, then you are not in the stats.
All the dreamers want to work from home, on their terms, not all jobs
can do that.

So that’s exactly what the sign says, stop dreaming for the perfect Work from Home job and go to work in the field.

What are you basing this insight on?

As a manager who does the hiring, I base it on all the applicants, I use Indeed, that apply
for a job, but then when you contact them, they don't show for the interview.
They are CYA-ing just keep the benefits coming, no intention of working.

The unemployment numbers don't take into consideration those that are not actively looking for jobs or have left the workforce.

To really understand what is going on you need to look at the total number of jobs from 2019 vs 2022 and the total number of individuals employed from 2019 vs 2022.

What you will find is that we do have job growth, we do have increased population within the 16-65 year old group, but we have a decrease in the number of individuals employed and job seekers.

That is what has lead us to a labor shortage, and IMO reduced efficiency. Everyone is trying to hire, they are having to pay people more, and to put it bluntly, the quality of applicants is the worst I have ever seen and businesses are hiring them anyway.

maybe boasting about the 'gig economy' wasn't so great.

Do you want to work a crummy job for low pay, no benefits and no future with no chance of anything getting better? Maybe the wonderful capitalist system should show its flexibility by actually acknowledging that people working are part of the vaunted equation.

I guess I'm not entirely convinced that your conclusion necessarily follows from your experience. Maybe I'm just being stubborn.

US employment rate is down about 1% from peak pre-pandemic [tradingeconomics.com]

To be honest, I am curious why we continue to have hiring shortages under these conditions. I don't think there's been an adequate explanation.

Complaints about people not wanting to work have been around forever. It is not new. Every generation seems to rediscover this phenomenon.

My question is how people who are working all the low paying jobs are getting by at all. And how those who don't work are getting by. I sure don't see people who are surviving on "gov't handouts" being able to afford rent, etc. They must be stacking up 10 to an apartment, I guess. I can understand why people don't drive an hour commute to work at McDonald's though.

I tend to agree, yet I am not a hiring manager. I think when you have low unemployment like we do, you might logically see a pool of applicants that are less motivated or less qualified, just because the more motivated and/or qualified folks have already been snapped up.

But similarly to Pam, I am generally skeptical of Kids these days arguments.

So, inflation is running at 9%, but people are not working because they are lazy? What are they using for money? Unemployment benefits are limited, the COVID bonus is long gone, and contrary to conservative talking points, there is no place you can go to just sign up for government checks--the burgeoning homeless are proof of that.

Boomer math is not explaining this shortfall.

I wish I had an answer to this

There is if you are an illegal immigrant.

They will also give you a new top-of-the-line iPhone, a college education, a new car and a house according to conservatives.
