A Duke volleyball player reported having racist remarks yelled at her during the game. A BYU fan was then banned from any future sporting events. Except investigators now say he didn't do it, and no evidence has been found to show it ever happened.

BYU Police Lt. George Besendorfer said that an initial review of surveillance footage revealed that the man who was banned was not shouting anything at the time he was alleged to have yelled a slur at Duke sophomore Rachel Richardson, who is the only black starter on the team, while she was serving.

“There is zero evidence of a slur being said. Not a single witness, besides Ms. Richardson, has come forth. Not a single cell phone video or BYUtv’s several camera angles caught a single thing. How unlikely when this person supposedly said a slur during ‘every single serve.'”

The full story has far more detail about the event and reaction during the game -- []

Date: August 31, 2022 09:27PM unnamed source from the BYU athletic department reportedly told the student paper, the Cougar Chronicle, that Richardson “complained of hearing a racial slur during the second set but did not point anyone out. Officials discussed briefly and stationed policemen there… there were no more complaints until after the match.”

He said after the game a “mentally challenged fan approached a Duke player.”

“The Duke team then suddenly recognized the handicapped man’s ‘voice’ as the same one shouting slurs,” the anonymous source said. “They never saw or pointed out a face, just a voice. They banned this man. Not for slurs, but for interfering with visiting guests.

First of all, you have linked to a a batshit tabloid source.

I believe the Duke player. The above makes no sense based on what multiple Duke players said during and after the game.

It is perfectly understandable that in a crowd of 5,500 they have not yet correctly ID'ed the person or persons who were yelling the slur, and it's possible they never will.

Here is a legit source.

"Based on those reports, that could mean a second person, who did shout the slur, has not yet been identified and has not had any action taken against them by the Provo university.

BYU has not said it doubts Richardson’s account, and it is still investigating.

The school is asking for fans in attendance to share video and accounts from the match to help with the investigation. At the volleyball match the next day, BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe encouraged them to, as well, asking them to “have the courage to take a stand and take care of each other and more importantly the guests, our guests who we invited to come and play here.”

I tend to believe someone was yelling slurs, and super don't believe the player is making it all up, but there certainly is some investigating to do. It's nice to see the assumptions that BYU did not take it seriously are unfounded. Clearly they did.
