Not such a dumb action by the former prez. Packing the courts. Packed the Supreme Court for 2 lifetimes and the same for lower courts. He appointed more unqualified judges with an eye toward his future and it is working.

Thank Mitch and the Federalist Society for most of the nominations. Though I bet Tangerine did know more than his fair share of unqualified lawyers dreaming of court appointments.

The pipeline had been set up about 2009 when Mitch started slow walking Obama's nominations. That is why there were so many vacancies to fill/pack.

Highly recommend Supreme Revenge: Battle For The Supreme Court

Tells the 30 year effort of the Republicans to take over the court, and why.

Trump in an unqualified idiot. BUT...

He's a diabolical genius. Always puts his people in place where he needs them. Controls incriminating evidence against him by obsessing over paper and electronic trails.

Bork’ s situation has very little to do with this thread.

Trump would have liked him though. See ‘ Saturday Night Massacre ‘.

Ted Kennedy torpedoed Bork for a reason, he was the poster boy for what SCOTUS has now become. Glad the current imbalance makes you happy.

Not just the poster boy, but largely nominated as payoff for his part in Nixon's Saturday Night Massacre. People with more scruples and ethics resigned rather than follow Nixon's order to fire Special Prosecutor Cox.

The PBS Frontline episode Supreme Revenge: Battle For The Supreme Court makes a very strong case that there IS a direct connection from Bork to the current Supreme Court judges, and consequences for tRump.

IF the D'S keep the House and win the Senate, its time to address the court. Expand it to 13, and make put judges on there that are as far to the left as Trump pushed to the right! I want to see AOC get 'concerned" over this.

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
“Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." - Eli Weisel

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"I don’t want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." - Billy Graham 1981

"Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise" - Barry Goldwater

A system that produces a court majority of lifetime appointees made by Presidents who lost the popular vote is deeply flawed and as undemocratic as you can get.

And add ethics rules to SCOTUS. Cough, cough, Clarence/Ginny Thomas.

For a couple of centuries a SCOTUS nomination was, for the most part, considered on merit. Now it's McConnell orchestrating a right wing takeover. Something is broken.
