Putin’s @#$%&. He’s simply a dead man walking. He can try to get all the men he wants, but they’ll desert him plus without weapons they’re useless. In the end he’ll not only lose the rest of Ukraine (including Crimea), but the Russian military and civilians will turn on him. I give him til next year sometime….then Futin’s pucked.

Potentially the most significant part of Putin's partial mobilisation decree:

All military service contracts (typically 3-6 months) currently in force extended indefinitely.

I think Putin was told his entire professional army was going to quit at the end of their contracts rather than face winter huddling in trenches hunted by Ukrainian SOF and torched by HIMARS.

My hunch is that though Putin hasn't totally given up on taking over all of Ukraine, that if his military hasn't made any significant progress in Ukraine by next spring that he will bluster mightily while actually angling for a peace deal where he gets to keep a big chunk of Eastern Ukraine.

If so, then I think a big sticking point in coming to a settlement is that Putin will almost certainly insist on Ukraine not being allowed to join NATO as a condition for him signing off but also almost certainly the Ukrainians will insist that they have the right to do that if they want (and they will want it for sure).

Twitter reading tells me that the army of 175K of his best troops is in tatters. 300k of new conscripts with 2 weeks of training isn't going to move the needle at all.

And you gotta feel for the guy - he makes his most terrifying announcement to date and all we hear here in the US is TRUMP, TRUMP, TRUMP.

And if you can't get a flight and don't have bone spurs, turn to the internet for help. Maybe there will be a YouTube video.
