That part is responsible for that popular term. Out of all of Spike Lee's movies, School Daze is my favorite one. His second, clunky, low budget film.

I remember She's Gotta Have It much more clearly. That movie had some hilarious scenes.

I enjoyed that greatly. I remember sitting there at the theater, thinking, "This is the first movie I've seen that was exactly how the Black guy wanted it to be." That wasn't exploitation. There was a gigantic billboard of it on Sunset blvd.

I am sure it was the first movie I ever saw that was created by a Black person.

I remember stopping by the vid store to get a video before work. She's gotta have it wasn't that well known. When asked what I was holding, I realized the title wouldn't go over well with the boss, but luckily, one of my coworkers knew the movie and explained for me that no, it wasn't porn!

LOVED that movie, but Do the Right Thing is my fav by far. Great pacing, amazing color - first rate cast all around.

Nope. I wasn't a big film-goer back in the day, because I grew up in a suburban town with the nearest theater five towns away. Then I was a starving art student. I had a lot of catching up to do when the vcr was invented, and I'm still lagging far behind most people in number of movies seen.

There are definitely earlier films with a true Black aesthetic. "Black Girl" directed by Ossie Davis is an interesting film which happens to be free on the YouTube. Leslie Uggams and Brock Peters. It's kinda clunky but you know, I can forgive that. [youtu.be]

Cooley High directed by the the criminally overlooked Michael Schultz is pretty legendary. It also happens to be free on the YouTube. These days people don't understand that the movie was a period piece. A mid 70's film that depicted the early to mid 60's. [youtu.be]

BUT MY ALL TIME FAVORITE BLACK FILM will always be "Claudine." Not directed by a Black person but you just can't beat Dianne Carroll and James Earl Jones in their Mega Primes. I remember my mom, brother and sister going to the drive in to see it. And of course the soundtrack can't be beat. What? Totally free on the YouTube??? [youtu.be]

There's a movie from 1996 called "Watermelon Woman" that's about a queer black woman which was made by a queer black woman. It's so 90s that she works in a video rental store! It's part autobiographical and part documentary and part comedy and part discussion of sexual and race relations and very good, which is amazing to me considering how much she was mixing up into one film.

Right. Very few of them were written and/or directed by Black people. Earnest Tidyman wrote "Shaft" which wasn't a Blaxploitation film per se, but as a white guy, he wrote it with sensitivity. He wasn't happy with the final product though. You can easily spot the compromises/panderings in Shaft. Still a great movie.
