The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office has stripped 47 deputies of their firearms and peace officer duties after an internal audit revealed they were never qualified to be hired because they had failed their psychological evaluations, authorities said.
- - - -
“As a result of this audit, it was learned that the result of your psychological examination was listed by the psychologist who performed your evaluation as ‘D. Not Suited,’” the letter reads. “A great deal of research, and current advice from both POST [Police Officer Standards and Training] and County Counsel has confirmed that any candidate who is evaluated as ‘D. Not Suited’ cannot serve as a peace officer in the state of California.”
- - - -
But Megan Polous, a spokesperson for POST, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the grading guidelines for POST-certified psychological exams have never changed. She said letter grades — such as C’s or D’s — are not used to determine results of POST-certified psychological evaluation.

Ahern told deputies in the letter that the Sheriff’s Office intends to “resolve this issue as quickly as possible” and have deputies “return to your full duty status once you obtain a ‘suitable’ finding.” The deputies are currently still with the department, receiving pay and benefits, according to the letter.

"once you obtain a "suitable" finding"? confused smiley

Most of those involve repeatedly asking "so, do you have thoughts of suicide?"

Ahern needs to convince me the deputies aren't just going to get training to only pass the test and not actually improve their mental health or attitude towards citizens.

The country still needs a national registry for law enforcement so that they won't just get a job at a different department if they are fired/retired for cause.

This sort of introspection isn't anything the Los Angeles County Sheriff would ever consider applying to his gang of deputies. (google LASD gangs for more info)

About that…

“[Lt. Ray Kelly, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office] said deputies required to re-test would now need a C- grade to pass their evaluations and be returned to duty.”

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
As of July 16, 2022, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is now available by simply dialing 988. The previous number, 1-800-273-8255, will remain active.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

My attitude toward this stuff evolved from reading the "mismeasure of man". Did they choose this psych inventory or assessment because it had been shown to be predictive of future performance? Probably not. Did they evaluate the tool to make sure it was predictive of performance within their department? Almost absolutely not. No one spends the money/time to do this.

I guarantee the only reason this is an issue is liability. If an officer does something that results in a complaint and has that score, they lose. No reason at all to believe the score predicts performance. They didn't think past the point where the assessment helped them appease some administrator.

This type of thing happens in every field I've worked, health care, education and business.

Smart money says Ahern knew about this all along, and said 'Get me some deputies.

Another external audit showed that ACSO was down ~250 deputies, and they were under mandate to bring staffing up to that level.

He was desperate to get more deputies.

Ahern demanded that academies be over filled with candidates, for various reasons, some to improve staffing, some to be get money from other departments who sent people to the ACSO academy.

He's got a lot of problems and should never have been elected.

Charles Plummer, the previous Sheriff who endorsed Ahern, told him that he (Plummer) made a mistake in doing so.

Ahern ignored all the progress Plummer made within the ACSO, and let it fall by the wayside.

Plummer would never have let the staff drop, and would have planned for the wave of retirements of boomers, and would have absolutely dropped D. Not Suited hires.

Under Plummer, ACSO Academy now requires a score of 80 to graduate, where most in CA only require 70.

POST, not too long ago, made graduating in CA tougher by requiring all most all academy testing (not the pre-hire screening) be done at the end of the 28 week course.

Previously, testing was done as training modules were completed throughout the 28 weeks.

Plummer has left some monster shoes to fill, and Ahern never came close.

There are high hopes for Yesenia Sanchez, an ACSO Commander, who trounced Ahern in the election for Sheriff.

She takes office in Jan, 2023.
