I’ve moved beyond distress to bemusement when I hear things like this from people. Exactly how has the Democratic party moved to the left?

By recognizing same-sex marriage? Then be brave and tell us you want to reverse it, unlike the vast majority of the population.

By supporting Roe v Wade, the stable and reasonable law of the land for 50 years (during which, BTW, the incidence of abortion decreased more or less continuously)? Then explain how you think it’s really better to have men making medical decisions to control women’s bodies.

By following pre-existing immigration law instead of making it up as you go along? Then say America will no longer accept refugees, seasonal workers or immigrants of any sort when our economy lives - indeed, thrives on it.

By trying to reduce American gun deaths or the obscene number of guns in this country?

By endeavoring to maintain the long tradition of the separation of church and state? Or fighting against the erosion of voting rights?

Or investing in infrastructure? Or not cozying up to foreign despots?

The Republicans have tracked wildly to the right in the last 30 years. What is it exactly where the Democrats have moved to the left?

Tell us, please. In specific, not platitudes.

I think there may be an argument to be made that immigration and voting rights are being racialized, but it ain’t the Dems who are doing it…
