Lula defeats Bolsonaro to again become Brazil’s president
[apnews.com]

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s electoral authority said Sunday that Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the leftist Worker’s Party defeated incumbent Jair Bolsonaro to become the country’s next president.

With 98.8% of the votes tallied in the runoff vote, da Silva had 50.8% and Bolsonaro 49.2%, and the election authority said da Silva’s victory was a mathematical certainty.

Da Silva — the country’s former president from 2003-2010 — has promised to restore the country’s more prosperous past, yet faces faces headwinds in a polarized society.

It is a stunning return to power for da Silva, 77, whose 2018 imprisonment over a corruption scandal sidelined him from that year’s election, paving the way for then-candidate Bolsonaro’s win and four years of far-right politics.

His victory marks the first time since Brazil’s 1985 return to democracy that the sitting president has failed to win reelection. His inauguration is scheduled to take place on Jan. 1.

This despite massive voter suppression efforts by police throughout most of the country. Overcoming voter suppression can be done, overcoming voter apathy maybe not.

I’ll wait until Pres. Trump Bolsonaro makes the mathematical call. Until then, Pare o roubo.

Ali Alexander, the "stop the steal" leader who organized the Jan 6 rally is calling on the Brazilian military to stage a coup to keep Bolsonaro in power.

From that article:

He [Alexander] posted a screenshot of a Foreign Policy article, which summarized a comprehensive diplomatic effort by US leaders to pressure Brazilian authorities into upholding Brazil's democracy and election results. Alexander misleadingly used the screenshot to support his baseless claim that the Biden administration rigged Brazil's election.

Unlikely this is over. Bolsonaro and his supporters already have a blueprint of how to retain power, and I'm guessing the military in Brazil are much more likely to support him than the US military was in supporting Trump.

I was expecting some nasty news today - I just checked the news... Bolsonaro has not made a public comment as of yet, so anything can happen, but if he doesn't make a claim soon, I'd think it would be too late...

after some more reading, I found this:

"Nothing is finished," an official close to Bolsonaro told ABC News. "We have evidence there was massive fraud and we will dispute the results."

"We have irrefutable evidence of fraud," Eduardo dos Santos, an ardent Bolsonaro supporter, told ABC News. "Nothing is over until January 2023. We are waiting for our president to speak. We will do what he tells us."

Many key Bolsonaro allies in the public sphere, from the new governor of Brazil’s most populous state, São Paulo, to the president of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, to prominent televangelists, have said the election is over and that they will respect the vote.
