Expensive office chair question - would you rather...

...pay $500 for a chair locally with no warranty (other than a soft "if something goes wrong within the first 6 months, we'll fix the chair") vs $750 for a refurbished version of the same chair that would get shipped (10 year refurbisher warranty), or $1600 for brand new from manufacturer (with 12 year manufacturer warranty). Let's say it's the Herman Miller Aeron chair, for example.

Let's say the particular model of chair is a known favorite/good fit and that my question now is more about the cost/benefit analysis of whether the savings would end up being "real" in the sense that spending 1/3 of the $$ for the local option vs full price new could either end up paying off (if it lasts at least 4 years), or it could end up costing me, if the chair fails in less than a few years and doesn't have any sort of warranty coverage.

What say ye?

Unless the local source will put it in writing, there is no warranty period. I would go for the refurb as long as it truly is refurbed akin to Apple refurbs.

I buy plain old used high-end chairs locally, and have had zero problems. I check them out first, in person.

I'm seeing Aerons locally on craigslist starting at $300. Not sure about condition.

Unfortunately, I'm in a smaller city with lower volumes of such items. I don't really see this sort of thing available very much at all.

When you get into buying refurbished, even with warranty, check out the companies well. For example, I have been looking to buy an Aeron for myself. But the best deals price wise turned out to be from dealers with many complaints about failure to live up to their warranty or who misrepresented the level of refurbishment done or use non-original parts for the repairs.

Where I could find recommendations from buyers online, prices tended to be in the 50-60% of new from the manufacturer or authorized dealer.

P.S. One of those dealers sells through Newegg's website, but not sold or shipped by Newegg.

You can get top-notch chairs at good prices here: [www.madisonseating.com]. Shipping was...leisurely, but it did arrive. I am a satisfied customer, and it was recommended to me by a fellow MRF'r.

Mine arrived looking indistinguishable from new. Some assembly required.

I would go with the $500 local option
If you had to get a repair, I think you would spend less than $250
I inherited my FIL’s Aeron chair and it is going strong these many years later, but I do not use it every day, so not sure what your use per day is.

I bought a refurb chair from Madison seating and it looked brand new. It still looks almost brand new about ten years later and it was used by me and later my husband, who was hard on chairs. It was a Steelcase chair

It depends on whose fat ass originally occupied the chair, Biden’s or Trump’s. Check for ketchup or mustard stains to confirm.

I'd buy local. I'd look over the chair first and sit in it and if it looked/felt good, I'd pull the trigger. I've had cheap chairs fall apart but not good chairs.

Unless a product has a manufacturer's warranty, from a trusted manufacturer, it has no warranty as far as I'm concerned.

A 'refurbisher' who is not the manufacturer would have to have some excellent bona fides before I trusted them with my money.

....I found one in the garbage of my building....it gets many renters, people moving out.....I went to dump some garbage and saw it right there.....at first I thought it might be a copy but it had all the markings of being an original......there were some light scuff marks in a small spot but everything else worked.....

....if it were me, I go the local route with the $500....
