Okay...NOW get a booster
(New Moderna also as effective)

Pfizer says omicron booster is better against new subvariants like BQ.1.1 than old shots
[www.cnbc.com]

Pfizer said its omicron booster triggers a stronger immune response against a number of emerging Covid subvariants circulating the U.S.

The booster triggered more antibodies against omicron sublineages BQ.1.1, BA.4.6, BA.2.75.2 and XBB.1 in adults older than 55 compared to a fourth dose of the original vaccines, according to new data released by the company on Friday. Antibodies are a key part of the immune system that block the virus from invading cells.

Pfizer developed its booster against omicron BA.5 at the request of the Food and Drug Administration. BA.5 was the dominant strain of Covid in the U.S. over the summer, but is now fading away as subvariants such as BQ.1.1. started becoming more dominant.

BQ.1.1 and its sibling BQ.1 are causing about 48% of new infections in the U.S. right now, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. BA.5, meanwhile, has declined to about 25% of new Covid cases. BA.4.6 and BA.2.75.2 still make up a very small proportion of new infections, while XBB.1 is not present in significant enough numbers to show up in the data yet.

Antibodies against BQ.1.1 were about nine times higher in people who received an omicron booster, while they were about two times higher in those who received a fourth dose of the original vaccine. Among the emerging subvariants, the omicron booster elicited the strongest immune response against BA.4.6 with antibodies 11 times higher, and the weakest response against XBB.1 with antibodies about 5 times higher.

The booster triggers the strongest immune response against omicron BA.5, the variant it was designed against, with antibodies increasing 13 times in people older than 55, according to data previously released by Pfizer.

Moderna on Monday said its omicron booster induces an immune response against BQ.1.1 though the company didn’t provide specifics.

OK, I had the 4 shots and then had Covid in August. I remember a doctor telling me that there is a magic 90 day period of enhanced immunity when you've had the shots and the disease. Does anyone know the recommendation for whether people who have had the Covid should get the new shot, and when, and what the level of protection is predicted to be?

I had the booster on Sept 9th, should have been darned near peak immunity, but tested positive for COVID 2 weeks ago.

3 days of pretty severe symptoms including a super-high fever. Couldn't make it out of bed for more than a couple of minutes at a time without collapsing. Bounced back pretty quickly when the fever broke and I was able to drag myself out of bed.

Fully vaccinated and boosted.

New variants hit you whether you're vaccinated or you're vaccinated on top of COVID for "super-immunity." You can get them over and over again.

I managed to stay out of the hospital. And my recovery was amazingly rapid.

Guessing I'd probably be dead without the vaccine.

Stories like this scare the bejeezus out of me ... do you have any underlying / predisposing conditions?

(I do, and wonder if -- in my case -- I would be dead, despite all the precautions I've taken.)

A couple.

I always mask outside of the house/car with N95 or KF94, keep social distance when working with others, avoid visiting restaurants, haven't gone to the movies since 2020, go through loads of hand-sanitizer, wash my hands and clean under my nails with good soap when I return home. Still got it.

No idea where I picked it up.

Interesting note: I almost went to the hospital (was ready to call an ambulance if necessary) more than once when my fever spiked, but Ibuprofen got it down just enough. Tylenol did NOTHING.

...Yeah, it's scary. The early symptoms were like a cold or flu, but it rapidly turned into something altogether new and different and awful. I think I got off easy. Would not wish it on anyone.

Honestly, you're probably taking more precautions than I am at this point. I am N95 masking at work, but I find it nearly impossible to keep the mask on ALL the time-- it becomes uncomfortable after awhile, so I take it off when I'm alone. I should be doing a much better job of hand hygiene, but again this becomes very hard with all the places I go while at work. I am dealing with large numbers of students, but try to social distance when possible. I have been going to stores, etc., but am always masking when I do. Triply vaccinated (J&J/Pfizer/Moderna, as I've posted about here before) and boosted at least twice.

Re the Tylenol ... since the virus has a definite inflammatory component, it makes sense (at least to me) that ibuprofen would be the better choice, since Tylenol is an analgesic/antipyretic, but not an anti-inflammatory.

Have you had actual COVID before this recent bout, or just have had vaccinations and boosters?

Fully vaxxed and boosted, I keep my exposure to others as absolutely as little as possible, and am maskedup when leaving my door, just because of incidents like this.

And then I read that LA DPH is recommending indoor masking.

While they are an obvious minority, I still see people wearing mask, some even while driving or walking.

One can call that paranoia, but as a practitioner, it's just a matter of achieving oneness with my masks, and not having to do a lot of donning and doffing.

That my girlfriend is of the same mind, is a huge help.

I also say 'hi' and give a nod to people wearing masks, though most probably wonder what's up with the old guy.

Tiangou, did you consider trying to get paxlovid? I'm asking because I'm fully vaccinated too and was thinking I would try to get paxlovid if I came down with Covid, but maybe that's not such a good idea?

I should have gotten it, but the symptoms were so mild at first that I didn't think I'd need it.

Then it pounded me so hard and so fast that I wasn't in any condition to go out for a test at a pharmacy to get it.

Took several days before I could get a video conference with a doctor and by then symptoms were gone.

In retrospect, I should have gotten it as soon as I tested positive.

I could see me doing the same thing. I'll probably be more proactive after hearing your experience. Thanks for sharing.
