I do wonder what was the style was for women in Bethlehem in 0 AD.

Or was our Middle Ages Christian art representative of the style of the time ?

A simla and tunic.

Imagine something like a big piece of cloth wrapped around the shoulders and draped down around the body, similar in shape to a Mexican serape. And above that a loosely-draped single-piece not unlike a Roman tunic from the movies. Might be belted/sashed. Might be hooded, or they might have a separate cloak with a hood for the cold or rain.

And they'd wear veils and shawls in public. Closer to what women wear to an Orthodox synagogue these days than to a hijab.

...The wealthy would wear loose soft linen robes with wide sleeves, even in public.

Anyone with a little money -- male or female -- probably wore turbans as a mark of status.

Head scarves or a sari draped over the head is standard for women in Indian Orthodox churches.

A few women in our church have worn head coverings from time to time. Not sure what they are called but the look like a bandana or a doily. It doesn't happen very often but I always thought they were very nice looking.

Growing up Catholic there was always a Sunday Mass rule that women needed head covers, men did not.

But if they failed to wear them with hair showing were they dragged off to interrogation and torture? We're aiming for purity of worshipfullness here.

Still popular in some more traditional anabaptist denominations (Mennonite, et al.) and Apostolic churches. Bigger covering in some churches, all but a doily in others. Rarely bigger than a skullcap these days except maybe in some Amish congregation, where it can be bonnet sized. Never a "Madonna" thing like the OP, though. Outside of the Amish, "prayer caps" of any size have been disappearing over the last few decades except in the most conservative congregations.

I don't think the above are wearing it right.

The covering should be tight-fitting and cover all hair.

Spouse had to do so when she worked in costume at a local historical site interpreting colonial times to the early 1800s.

They wore such as a practical measure to keep their hair clean when around wood smoke all day.
