Wasn’t it the GOP who were pushing for ranked choice? And doesn’t it work out for them most of the time?

Maybe they can set Palin adrift on an ice flow now.

Why?

Peltola's election isn't the standard for Ranked Choice. Ranked Choice isn't designed to just dispatch Democrats by Republicans, it's to dispatch establishment Democrats, period. Used by the Right and the far left. This is why RgrF likes it so much. It allows candidates to collude with one another to handicap a frontrunner and collude with one another to "fix" an outcome. It's a tool.

If you wanted to be a Councilperson for your district, but there's no way you can defeat Carnos Jax, an old pol that is routinely elected. Candidate Sam3 is a known entity but you don't have the profile or the money required to upend Carnos Jax and keep him from receiving 50% of the vote.

But now you have ranked choice. You and your peoples huddle and try to figure out a way to take out Carnos Jax and his over-confident self.

So, you find one or two other candidates, preferably with a bit of profile to run alongside you. Now, Carnos Jax is facing several candidates that are running solely to keep him from reaching the 50% threshold.

Then...

Candidate Sam3 huddles with his highest profile partner candidate to basically require their voters to agree to make sure Sam3 is ranked #2 on their ballots.

it doesn't work most of the time. But it works strategically. That's how you have a AOC for example. The far left has a much more complex strategy for winning offices that involve 3 different PACs that work together to upend establishment candidates. If mostly doesn't work, but they're relentless. Their main focus and main success is taking over city councils and county supervisors from coast to coast.

You don't have to have RCV to basically affect the same outcome. But RCV makes it easier. I'm ok with Ranked Choice, but not collusion. If you're going to run for office, run to win.

Collusion is the latest trick - Florida does not have RCV (and actually passed a law outlawing it) but it does have closed primaries. Now the Republicans are putting up a No Party Affiliation candidate. That means the primary remains closed and a large number of voters never get a true say in the election. It is happening enough that I switched parties just to have a say in local races.
