if not Kevin McCarthy, who else? (not that it matters now, but hey...)

I don't think any republican (the few sane left, or most of the insane) would have voted with a democrat, so democrats had no chance of winning the speaker.

but, if all decorate were to pick one of the few sane republicans left in the house, and voted for that person, maybe a few other republicans would have joined them and we could have had a different leader.

so, is not Kevin McCarthy, who else from the republicans would have been a good choice? Liz Cheney comes to mind, maybe all democrats should have voted for her. the question is: would any current member of the house have voted for her?
