Not shooting it down over land because "It might fall and hit somebody" was an obvious BS cover story, particularly while it was over Montana.

My thoughts that the other issue with doing it over Montana or any land is "Who's land will it land on" and will there be an issue trying to recover the wreckage, some land owner trying to sell it to the highest bidder, etc.

where it landed was apparently a big deal. They intentionally shot it down over water, but within 12 miles of the coast within US waters.

Was this an extortionately provocative act by the government of China or routine spying that got caught up in our hyper-politicized media-sphere?

Didn't want to read all the posts in this thread. . On the news this morning there was a clip of an explosion close to the ballon . The reporter said the military didn't think it was important or dangerous I think they exploded an EMP device close to it . So weren't worried about. it .

I wonder if there is a bigger and deeper "game" going on between Xi Jinping and Biden. This balloon flap is far from directly having strategic consequences but maybe this reflects some posturing that is a set up for bigger disagreements. Or I guess it could just be Xi Jinping giving Biden the finger in response to what he felt was a fairly minor slight- tit for tat.

If Xi Jinping is intending to noticeably escalate negative relations between the countries, we'll probably get some more evidence for that before too much time. The more time goes by after this balloon incursion without noticeable escalation, it seems to me that it is more likely that the balloon thing by Xi Jinping was mostly to tweak Biden's nose.

The official also said that Chinese spy balloons had “briefly” transited the continental US three times while Donald Trump was president and once at the start of the Biden administration.

China has fired Zhuang Guotai, the head of the China Meteorological Administration, and insists the spy balloon was simply weather monitoring

I'll bet this is happens to be the first one that managed to cut straight accross the continent while the sky was clear.

This reminds me of the "oops, my bad"s that USSR and USA would trade during the cold war.

Looking forward to seeing a detailed inventory of what the balloon was carrying.
