Team Biden has not offered anything yet, at least the Republicans voted and passed something.

Sure he has.

Clean debt ceiling bill. Negotiate budget through regular order.

You know, the way things are supposed to work. The way things have been done (except for irregular fits of counterproductive Republican intransigence) for over a hundred years.

The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.

Replace "questioned" with "infringed" and conservatives might understand better.

There's plenty of talk that Biden is not holding the line 100% hard, that he has floated some cuts, just not to the satisfaction of the terrorists holding a gun to head of the economy. Otherwise, what would they have been talking about during the negotiation sessions thus far?

Republicans voted to raise the debt ceiling three times when Donald Trump was president, with no preconditions.

On April 26, 2023, the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Republicans, narrowly passed budget legislation raising the federal government's legal debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion on the condition that deep spending cuts would also be undertaken. Democrats balked at the spending-cuts requirement, demanding instead the passage of what they called a "clean bill" without preconditions to raise the debt ceiling before the deadline of June 1, when the government would default on its debts.

---

In 2017, 2018, and 2019, the debt limit was reset at $20.5 trillion, $22 trillion and $28.4 trillion, respectively. None of these bills, when signed into law, contained a precondition to cut spending, despite the wishes of some Republicans.

It should be noted, though, that the 2019 legislation, which included hefty spending increases for defense and domestic programs, did mandate $77 billion in "offsets" for those spending increases. According to Rep. Lloyd Smucker, R-Pa., the $77 billion in offsets would be achieved in two ways: 1) "$15.5 billion from extending the expiration date of customs user fees" from May 26, 2027, to Sept. 30, 2029, and 2) $61.7 billion from "extending mandatory spending sequester" (described by the Congressional Budget Office as "automatic spending cuts that occur through the withdrawal of funding for certain —but not all — government programs") from Sept. 30, 2027, to Sept. 30, 2029. These administrative offsets were described by some as "cosmetic."

By contrast, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's "Limit, Save, Grow Act" of 2023, as passed by the House, would require broad-based spending cuts totaling $4.5 trillion, according to CBS News. As of this writing, Democratic U.S. President Joe Biden had said he would refuse to sign the act into law, and it was said to be "dead on arrival" in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Mr 645 has already been "enlightened" on the Republicans and their debt ceiling approvals during tRump's occupation of the White House, but he will continue to ignore those facts. For dogmatic consistency, emotional reassurance? Who knows?

Republicans still support raising the debt limit, however also want some cuts in spending.

We theoretically want to cut spending sharply, but since we can't find anything specific to cut (other than anything you passed, which doesn't add up to nearly enough to satisfy our rabid caucus), we'll leave that part up to you to be blamed for. Oh, and if you don't go along, we'll do our best to wreck the economy.

That's not a "plan", it's a ransom note. In fact, it's not even a plan in McCarthy's view:

Quote

McCarthy also told [GOP] members that once he is at the table, he can push for other policy provisions down the road, according to multiple sources in the room, underscoring the idea that leadership sees the GOP-only plan as purely a way to strengthen their hand at the negotiating table.

Poor Kevin can't seem to keep his mouth shut (like when he went on Faux News and admitted all the Benghazi stuff was only to drive down Clinton's numbers).

however also want some cuts in spending.

They should have done that before they passed the trillion dollar tax cuts for people who were already doing just fine.

Exactly when did Trump release his taxes? I know he said he would as far back as 2015. He fought every attempt to have them released all the way to the Supreme Court. In the end the IRS turned them over to the House Ways and Means Committee and they released them.

Actually, I've been hugely impressed at how Donald Trump came up with the idea of using mRNA as a vaccine, then figured out how to modify it to make it more stable in an environment that is admittedly hostile to RNA stability, and then figured out how to manufacture a deliverable vaccine in large quantities. Then, in the face of substantial resistance to the acceptance of the vaccine, Trump showed the marvelous political skill that was required to bring even the resistant faction along to widespread acceptance of the vaccine as necessary to bring the epidemic to a halt here in the USA. And then he modestly refused to take all the credit, but magnanimously praised the tens of thousands of people who participated in the process.

Oh, wait. Hmmm.

You failed to give him credit for getting COVID45 so he could test Paxlovid to ensure that it was safe and effective.

Just in case anyone bought the blather about McCarthy wanting to "negotiate".

Debt ceiling talks stall amid pushback from Kevin McCarthy’s right flank

WHAT a surprise.

RollingEyesSmiley5

Quote

The rollercoaster debt ceiling talks are back at a stalemate amid a full-throated effort by the most conservative members of Kevin McCarthy’s caucus to preemptively kill any bipartisan deal.

Influential Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) told a right-wing host Tuesday night that “my position is to hold the damn line” and force a GOP-only plan into law, one of the many similar comments from Republicans in recent hours.

So much for "negotiation". These nuts are terrorists that think they have taken us hostage. The narrowest of House majorities, and they think the Senate and White House should just roll over.

Quote

...The conservative distaste surfacing online and in person reflects the official position of the powerful House Freedom Caucus.

The group said last week that McCarthy should refuse to negotiate and force the Senate to simply pass a sprawling GOP proposal that rolls back large pieces of Biden’s accomplishments.
