Washington — Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the far-right group known as the Oath Keepers, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for seditious conspiracy and other crimes related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, receiving the longest sentence in a Jan. 6 case to date.

...It was the first time the terrorism enhancement has been applied to a Jan. 6 defendant.

...according to prosecutors, Rhodes and his fellow Oath Keepers planned for violence ahead of the Capitol breach, communicated via encrypted messages and radios during the attack, and celebrated their actions in its aftermath.

"It is conduct that threatened and continues to threaten the rule of law in the United States," prosecutors said in court on Thursday. "Mr. Rhodes has been calling for violent opposition to the authority of the government of the United States for well over a decade … He continues to advocate for political violence."

Well, IIRC, he wanted to go to trial.

May be having second thoughts now.

Ahead of his sentencing, a defiant Rhodes stood before Mehta, clad in an orange jumpsuit, and insisted that he is a 'political prisoner' who, like Trump, was trying to oppose people 'who are destroying our country.'

'I believe this country is incredibly divided. And this prosecution - not just of me, but of all J6ers - is making it even worse. I consider every J6er a political prisoner and all of them are being grossly overcharged,' he said.

He also vowed to 'to expose the criminality of this regime' from his prison cell.

Rot in hell traitor.

Hell would be better but I'll settle for almost two decades in a federal prison. And then when he dies he can go to hell. winking smiley

I agree he should been sentenced to 20yrs minimum.

Maybe like $99 being less than $100, the judge was trying to manage optics?

Anyway, 18yrs, is still a much bigger number than I ever expected so see, so good on Mehta.

I wish all the OK'ers got/get similar sentences, in the spirit of follow the leader and all hang together.

full treason is 20 years to execution. 18 years is a pretty steep sentence.

If you plan an armed insurrection, you damn well better win.

If it's true that he would have to serve at least 85% of his sentence, assuming good behavior, then he is in at least 15 years. A lot is going to happen between now and 2038, and even if he has some credit for time served, it's still a long ways off. And my guess is that this isn't the best behaved of prisoners, if his words represent his state of mind.

Let's see if any other of the convicted seditionists suddenly wants to cut a deal to testify against Trump. I kind of doubt that any of them has the goods, but that would be how this kind of investigation works.

They all talk tough until the facts of prison life are explained. He'll likely be in a medium security facility, so there will be lots of 'explainers' there.
