Move to oust McCarthy has started

Wasting no time, a GOP House member has called for the removal of Kevin McCarthy.

Representative Dan Bishop of North Carolina said McCarthy “capitulated” to Democrats and he plans to trigger the formal process to remove the speaker. The “motion to vacate has to be done,” he told reporters. Bishop is a member of the far right Freedom Caucus.

Bishop would not comment on whether the vote would be called before the debt compromise is taken up.

I cannot believe that McCarthy didn't know this would happen when he gave Matt Gaetz and MTG his balls to hold on to.

I would hope they get a vote on the deal before they try to hang Pence uh…McCarthy.

If not, there’s always the discharge petition - only need 5 R’s to vote for this off-ramp - although that would delay things. But then maybe Biden would say F’ it; 14th amendment - and we could be rid of this charade forever.

If the Dems vote to keep him, I predict another vote every week until the Freedumb Caucus gets rid of him.

On the plus side, oil markets made nervous by wacko Republican obstructionism saw US oil drop below $70 today.

Biden can now refill the strategic reserve with cheaper oil than the oil he released last year, just as he planned.

This. This is the crazy, topsy-turvy upside down world in which we now live.

The real question is: Will it take as many rounds of voting to oust him as it did to elect him?

The great thing is that the Dems hold the cards to McCarthy’s future, not the Freedom Caucus.

This is the most important question with respect to whether or not the debt limit compromise passes. If before, it's going to become a real crapshow.

I can imagine McCarthy refusing to take a recall vote to the floor, in effect acting as a dictator to his own caucus. They would call him a deal breaker, but dictators seem to be respected in his party, and the Democrats would just sit by and laugh.

Any recall of McCarthy happens after the debt limit vote, says Rep. Buck.

Also, the nutjobs on the Rules committee failed to keep the bill from advancing to the floor.

It's going to pass; the interesting part will be how many R's will vote against it, and whether Dems will help rescue McCarthy after it passes. It took a week of wrangling and kowtowing to right wing extremists to get McCarthy voted in as Speaker - who the hell is going to take the job if he gets tossed after the first real vote?

The far right nutters seem to have no reality-based strategy or end game. They don't seem to have any proposals that have a gnat's chance of passing. They are simply holding a gun to the economy's head and saying that if we don't give in to their demands to destroy all government assistance programs that most of the country relies on then they are going to pull the trigger.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

This happened to the last GOP Speaker in 2011 after the attempt to make real change by working with Obama.

I hear AOC and the lefty lefts are also going to vote against the bill. I love AOC, but she's just pandering to her constituency. She needs to start putting country before whininess.

She votes over 90% with Dems. She'll vote no on some things, but she's been careful to not obstruct anything.

I miss having a government where no one knew any legislator outside their district because everyone did their job without headline-grabbing idiocy.

I guess it's looking like it will pass because even the idiot loaded Republicans in the House probably have enough sense that ever since McCarthy agreed to the compromise that the Republicans would take the full blame in the minds of most of the country if we went into default and the economy went to crap.

As to the Democrats helping McCarthy stay Speaker by voting for him - why would they do that? Seems like disarray among the Republicans in trying to elect a new Speaker without their votes would just make the Republicans look really bad.

Well, certainly that’s what the Republicans would do if the roles were reversed.

But two reasons to support McCarthy. One, as little as I think of him, his seemed to be the coolest head on the Republican side (despite the initial rhetoric and the fake, extreme bill the House passed), and if that head appears on a pole, the GOP will become even more extreme.

Two, (and related), if the bill passage is bipartisan (which it will; probably similar numbers of votes from both sides), people will notice, the crazies will be weakened, and maybe, just maybe, the Republican party can start to turn back toward being a responsible political party in this country instead of what it’s become. McCarthy could be part of that- not saying he will, but I think there’s a better chance of that happening with him than someone like Chip Roy or Gym Jordan on top.

Maybe this is wishful thinking. I think it may be worth a try.

If McCarthy was willing to give some on allowing votes on some legislation that Democrats care about that could also get some Republican support then it might make sense since it would show willingness on his part to operate in somewhat more of a bipartisan fashion. If not, then I don't think it would be worth giving up the benefit that would come from watching the Republicans go after each other.

George Santos says he already has enough votes to be the next speaker.

Seriously, who do the wackos think will be the next speaker? It sure won't be one of them. If it came down to the Wacko or Jeffries, I wouldn't be surprised at all if a few Republicans crossed over and voted for Jeffries. Of course, anyone can be the speaker, it does not have to be a house member, so Kari Lake is available (she plans to sue if she isn't elected anyways.

McCarthy isn't going anywhere before Jan. 2025.

Perhaps. But he will owe his continued Speakership to the Dems if he survives.

Which he will never admit and will immediately condemn them.
