Almost 1 in 4 people in the US hadn’t gotten COVID by the end of 2022: CDC
[thehill.com]

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has estimated that almost 1 out of 4 people in the U.S. still hadn’t been exposed to COVID-19 by the end of 2022 after nearly three years of the pandemic.

In its final survey looking at the period between October and December 2022, the CDC estimated that about 77.5 percent of people had infection-induced antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The CDC began conducting studies looking into seroprevalence, the presence of antibodies against a virus in someone’s blood, beginning in January 2022. The agency observed seroprevalence in three-month increments over the course of last year.

Broken down by demographics, younger people — aged between 16 and 29 — had the highest percentage of natural antibodies at 87.1 percent, with this percentage decreasing among older groups.

Across racial groups, Hispanic individuals had the highest rate of naturally induced antibodies at 80.6 percent. Black, white and other racial/ethnic groups all shared about the same rate of natural antibodies, around 77 percent.

However, non-Hispanic Asians were found to have significantly lower rates of infection-induced antibodies than the others groups, with 66.1 percent found to have the antibodies. While the CDC did not provide an explanation for this, earlier data had found that Asians in the U.S. had generally lower infection rates.

An analysis released by KFF last year found that Asians had the lowest cumulative infection rate among racial/ethnic groups from 2020 to 2022.

While about 3 out of 4 people carried antibodies from natural infections, nearly all people — 96.7 percent — were found to have some form of COVID-19 antibodies in their systems due to vaccination, infection or a combination of both.

Why doesn’t that surprise me about Asians, almost none of them (here in the US) took any chances, whether it was wearing masks, social distancing, or keeping up-to-date on the vaccines). At least this was my observation of friends and family. The only exception in my family are some anti-VAXer‘s, and they lost their husband/father because of it…pieces of sh|t, I still don’t talk to them because of it, he was such a nice guy.

No one in my immediate family ever got Covid, even though we’re all high-risk. Myself even more so, and my mom, extremely high risk due to age and diabetes, and overall frailty.

My wife and I are not sure if we had COVID or not.
Before the shutdown of March 13, 2020 during Feb school vacation,
my wife said that both staff and kids in her out of school time program were
dropping like flies. During this time, I noticed that if I took a really deep breath, it would hurt.
Doing our normal neighborhood walk of 3 miles seemed harder. Kind of like it's harder to breathe
if the air is extremely cold, but it was more normal cold. That lasted about 2-3 weeks, then as March
rolled on and CDC was talking about symptoms, we just looked at each other and said,
"Oh, I wonder if..." By the time doctor zoom visits happened, my doctor said we will never know.

What's the medical definition of exposed? My son, who lives with me, had Covid in August 2022 so I was certainly in my mind exposed. But I've never come down with it. Test myself every time I've get the slightest sniffles.

don't know if I had it or not (wonder if I can get a test to see if I've got infection-induced antibodies); back during late-Spring or early Summer of 2020, I distinctly remember having a weird sinus congestion - it got to the point where I ordered a nasal irrigation device (which helped immensely). Sometime around 4-5 months ago, I had the same kind of thing (although less severe), and broke out the irrigator again. No other symptoms, though either time...and I'd never had such a thing before in my life up until that point. For what it's worth - I'm of East Asian descent.

I've yet to get it. My body is bristling with boostege. I'm still a masker. All I have to do for discipline's sake is to think about the word "intubation."

Still masking after all these years.

I have to look into getting the latest booster.

I've never tested positive or had symptoms. Got the shots of course.

Been exposed numerous times, particularly in 2020 pre-vaccine. A couple of caregivers at the house were positive for days before finding out. They all wore masks very consistently.

It'll be interesting to find put if some of us No-vids have a difference in immuno response. Or maybe we've just been lucky.

My Mom, 81, also has never gotten COVID thank goodness.

Never had COVID either, as far as I know. Have had all the vaccines and boosters, including my second omicron booster just last week. Also, still mask when out shopping, etc.

My wife did not get COVID to my knowledge, but I did (caught from a visit to a college where no masks were worn, and my booster was over 6 months' old. Was scheduled to get it the following week.)

My wife DID get RSV, and it was MUCH worse than my moderate COVID. Just shy of hospitalization. She's had pneumonia on several occasions and so had all of the respiratory home treatments, which kept her breathing.

There was a study that estimated ~10% of the population are basically intrinsically immune. I wondered whether she was one of those lucky ones.

There was a ton of non-Covid stuff going around in March of 2020. Darn near everyone I know, including me, got sick with something around that time and lots of people thought in retrospect that they'd had Covid. For the majority, it wasn't Covid, just some other nasty bug.

October 2020 wife and I get a COVID antibody test, both test positive for COVID-19 antibodies, neither of us recall being sick in the past several years

Feb 2021 wife is approved for the 2 shot Moderna vaccine and gets both doses a couple of weeks apart
April 2021 I go get a vaccine, J&J single dose

March 2022 I contract COVID, give it to my wife, I battled a slight cough for 3 days, treated myself with Dayquil, my wife felt strong flu like symptoms for 1 full day, went away after 24 yrs, she used prescription anti congestion medication.

Maybe we're part asian smiling smiley

Last I knew, the lab tests for antibodies in response to the vaccines were not available for clinical use, just for research.

96.7 percent — were found to have some form of COVID-19 antibodies in their systems due to vaccination, infection or a combination of both.

This is the part that makes sense to me. I have a hard time believing anyone hasn't been exposed to at least some extent. The second time I had it, I could easily have thought it was allergies. Not so much the first time (3 days post surgery, I thought I was going to die winking smiley

I was also going to say that I know some who would say they "succeeded" by not being exposed, but I think the best outcome is to be alive, healthy and have antibodies.

I am proud to be one of those who has never actually gotten COVID, but now have nicely positive antibodies. grinning smiley

One problem is that the "semi-quantitative" test currently available to check antibodies isn't really quantitative at all. It shows that you have antibodies, but it's not a reliable measurement of just how much you have, nor what proportion are really neutralizing antibodies. And of course it doesn't take the T-cell response into account.

how accurate are the tests relative to not rendering a + to all the other corona virii?

None in our household have ever tested +. Both my daughter and daughter-in-law have had it, but they are nurses. Hazzards of being frontline medical workers.

None in our household have ever tested +. Both my daughter and daughter-in-law have had it, but they are nurses. Hazzards of being frontline medical workers.

My understanding is that the tests are actually quite specific -- for example, a test for SARS-CoV-2 (the official name for the COVID-19 virus) will not pick up other distantly related coronaviruses (such as the ones that cause the common cold), and may not even pick up on other, more closely related coronaviruses like SARS and MERS.

In some cases, they might not even pick up on variants... for example, an omicron-specific test might not pick up the original alpha strain. BUT... of course it also depends on what type of test you're doing-- if it's PCR or an antibody test. Most of the current tests being done are antibody-based.

The one that I've had done repeatedly now is this one: [www.labcorp.com] ... which tests for how much antibody you have against the spike protein. It's claimed to be semi-quantitative, but as I mentioned, really isn't.

Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008) Private citizens have the right under the Second Amendment to possess an ordinary type of weapon and use it for lawful, historically established situations such as self-defense in a home, even when there is no relationship to a local militia.

"The conclusion is thus inescapable that the history, concept, and wording of the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States, as well as its interpretation by every major commentator and court in the first half-century after its ratification, indicates that what is protected is an individual right of a private citizen to own and carry firearms in a peaceful manner."
