McCarthy's Choice

"By the end of the week, McCarthy could have to make a defining decision: Either put an expected bipartisan Senate stopgap bill on the House floor and risk his speakership, or withhold scheduling a vote on the Senate proposal and side with hard-right legislators in triggering a government shutdown, according to several lawmakers who spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk frankly about the inner workings of the conference.
McCarthy is unlikely to bring the eventual Senate proposal up for a vote because it would require Democratic support to pass, according to multiple Republican aides who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal party dynamics. Members on the hard right, including many within the staunchly conservative House Freedom Caucus, have said that relying on Democrats to move the bill would probably result in a Republican lawmaker filing a motion to remove McCarthy from his speakership."

110 Democrats and 110 Republicans could form a ruling coalition the way that parliamentary coalitions are formed, and it could even rotate the speaker from one group to the other. I'm not saying that this could happen, but it would make for some interesting theater. Now that Trump says he is pro-choice, it could calm things down a bit on that issue.

And no, I don't know whether this is sarcasm or not.

McCarthy will allow the shutdown that will ding the US credit rating and thus cost taxpayer additional interest, a tax the GQP will never acknowledge is on them.

When did budget start getting passed with zero votes from the minority party?

If McCarthy gives the Dems the budget and they support his chair, it's a win-win for both sides. More importantly, it pulls the rug out from under the Freedom Caucus.

So, do the right thing and risk - just risk a vote to vacate from the nutjobs (which he may well win); or throw the government into indefinite park, giving yet more power to the extremists, who have already shown this just emboldens them to ask for more damage to our system.

Gee, that’s a toughie.

Well, we’ll see what kind of man and American McCarthy is. Unfortunately, I think I know the answer.

"Senate votes to advance short-term funding bill to avoid government shutdown"

The Senate voted Tuesday to advance a short-term funding measure to avoid a government shutdown at the end of the week.

The Senate voted 77 to 19 to advance the legislative vehicle they will use for a continuing resolution funding government until Nov. 17.

The vote puts the Senate on a path to pass a continuing resolution (CR) later this week that it could then send to the House to avoid a shutdown on Oct. 1.

The Senate did their work passing bipartisan spending bills. The House pouted.

Now, the Senate is passing a bipartisan escape plan to avoid the shutdown that the tiny nutjob caucus is trying to single-handedly create (and that the GOP leadership seems completely impotent against).

In a lame effort at both-sides-ism, Kristen Welker asked last weekend why Biden isn’t negotiating with the nutjobs. It’s not the president’s job to try to get a GOP fringe faction to grow up. Put another way, you don’t negotiate with (economic) terrorists.
