Hostage deal?
Posted by: gadje

various websites and TV stations say there are rumors a hostage deal is in the works, and BBC even said last night that a hostage deal has been reached in principle. It was on the scrolling banner at the bottom.

But of course we DO NOT TRUST BBC, do we?

Can we trust the Newsmax version.

Rumored 50 hostages. What happens to the remaining 190 people?
Still a continuing monumental crime by Hamas.

50 is better than 0.

One step at a time.

They released 4, now hopefully 50, then try to negotiate the other 190.

Killing children in Gaza does not help the remaining 190 hostages.

I'm sure that will make the hostages and their families feel all fuzzy inside.

How about release the hostages tomorrow and we'll see what the IDF does.

The problem is Hamas will use the cease fire to regroup, assemble new troves of weapons and cause the deaths of far more than 50 Israeli soldiers So far almost 400 soldiers have been killed and over 5000 injured in the Gaza war

Any pause of any kind will give Hamas time to adjust. Even without a pause they keep on fighting. But what else can you do? Leave the 50 hostages in captivity to push for a better deal that may or may not come? That is a cold calculus I am glad I don't have to make.

World Children's Day
[www.timesofisrael.com]

As the global community marks World Children’s Day, Israel’s official X account posts the images of the babies and children held in Gaza by terrorists.

“Look at each and every one of their faces. These are the babies, toddlers and children being held hostage by Hamas terrorists in Gaza,” the statement reads.

“They should be with their families. Not in a dark room somewhere in Gaza. BRING THEM HOME!” the statement reads.

Some 40 children and babies are among the more than 240 hostages taken hostage to Gaza during Hamas’s shock October 7 invasion of southern Israeli communities, when 3,000 terrorists broke through the border and murdered some 1,200 people, a majority of them civilians, amid brutal atrocities.

I'm not seeing details on who these Palestinian women and Children from Israeli jails are or why they are there. So far, it's only the Hamas rep talking about who Israel is trading.

nothing is final yet

Times of Israel

"Various reports of the deal have indicated that somewhere between 50 and 100 Israeli and foreign hostages would be released, in exchange for a five-day break in fighting and the release of somewhere between 150 and 300 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. Reports over the past week have said that Israel was demanding the release of all the children held in Gaza and their mothers as a condition.

An Israeli government source told reporters Tuesday evening that the deal is expected to see the release of 50 living Israeli citizens, mostly women and children, in groups of 12-13 people per day. In exchange Israel will release Palestinian women and minors from prison and return them to where they used to live, mostly the West Bank and East Jerusalem, pause fighting for four days and allow the entry of more fuel to the Strip.

kj was correct: Source AP [apnews.com]
TEL AVIV, Israel -- Israel’s Justice Ministry has published a list of 300 Palestinian detainees and prisoners who could potentially be released in a hostage deal.

Most of those on the list published Wednesday are teenagers arrested over the past year for relatively minor offenses, including throwing rocks or alleged incitement. None was convicted of murder, though some served sentences for attempted murder.

The youngest detainee on the list is 14, and it also includes around 40 women. The detainees are to be released to their homes in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

According to the truce-for-hostages deal announced Wednesday, 50 hostages will be released over four days, likely starting Thursday, during which fighting will pause.

“As we announce the striking of a truce agreement, we affirm that our fingers remain on the trigger, and our victorious fighters will remain on the look-out to defend our people and defeat the occupation,” Hamas said in a statement.

Steve,

In other words... Even with a hostage release arrangement, it's only a matter of time before Hamas breaks the cease-fire again. Note, why should Israel release a larger number of people than Hamas releases? If they are both going to release people be it hostages, prisoners, etc, isn't reasonable for _both__ sides to release the same number of individuals?

According to Israel, they would have preferred a 1:1 exchange, prisoners for hostages but Israeli leaders did what they had to do to gain release of as many hostages as possible.

The Palestinians being released were all convicted of violent crimes using a weapon.

I don't recall exactly what I posted that pisses you off, but it was not a personal attack.

It is a know fact that every time someone posts anything that is not 100% aligned with your POV, you question and attack. Look at this case, he suggested those could be teenagers throwing rocks, which turned out to be correct.

as i said earlier, you need to step back and take a look in the mirror.
