Very interesting. Can't say I'm schooled on all this but I think some here are. I put it on this side since there are very serious geopolitical issues raised. The troubled relationship between Taiwan and China (M chips) is one of them. Manufacturing outsourcing, globalization, work ethics, 5G implementation, and of course democracy vs central authority.

Also an absolute lack of environmental regulations, lax enforcement of the few rules that do exist, the ability to throw in prison/slave labor where needed to boost the economy, and an operational government that actually sees benefits to investing in infrastructure vs. a gridlocked one that is unable to act and whose default settings were stuck near "laissez faire" for 40+ years.

A libertarian paradise, IOW.

Arguably China has been even more of a libertarian paradise than the US for business, that's a big part of their growth advantage, except that the CCP / government is perfectly happy to reinforce the libertarian benefits with investments particularly in key resources, infrastructure, and technologies. The US, on the other hand, has let that state investment atrophy to facilitate tax cuts for the wealthy, subsidize classic climate crisis causing energy companies, basically do everything about as backwards as it could be done, making it even easier for the Chinese to overtake the US.

Witness their whole Belt and Road initiative. The US could have done that with the fall of the Iron Curtain 30 years ago. Instead, tax cuts for the wealthy and a winnowing of the middle class.

I've visited on a half-dozen times one of their special industrial districts. Not Shenzen, but one outside Shanghai.

I cannot overemphasize how easy it is to set up a company within one of these districts. Paperwork, space, governance, startup $$ - all readily available and within 48 hours.

Seriously.

Even in the best of times, this would be typically a year or more in the US.

Plus China steals IP.

Replace the word "Social" with something more palatable, like "Security" then answer which political movement in the US is more likely to look at that system and go, "Maybe..."

Oh, absolutely!

I visited SIP, and the ~1200 biotech companies there. I was there visiting the only company that, as far as I could tell, had unique IP. We were trying to make a deal.

In the end, we failed because there were not reassurances that if my company's IP was getting copied in China as a part of an 'IP leak' scenario, that we could sue.

I tried to get the Chinese company to invest into my company, so that if there was theft, the Chinese company could be suing another Chinese company.

The entire high speed rail system in China as far as I can tell is a total tech rip-off from Germany.
