Lawyers: Trump never took oath ‘to support the Constitution’

In a filing made to the Colorado Supreme Court, lawyers for former President Donald Trump say that he never took an oath “to support the Constitution of the United States’’ Instead, the attorneys noted, Trump swore “to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.”

Therefore he should not be banned from the state’s presidential ballot.

This should rank right up there with "I am not a crook" and "I did not have sexual relations with that woman"

The German word for contraceptive is “Schwangerschaftsverhütungsmittel”. By the time you finished saying that, it’s too late

I've posted about his lawyers' (attempted) tactic of making this argument here before.

To me, it goes well beyond "I am not a crook" or "I did not have sexual relations with that woman". In the first case, it was simple denial of wrongdoing. In the second case, denial of something that shouldn't have been asked about in the first place. In Dump's case, it's a complete denial of the job responsibilities of the job for which he was elected. In other words, he can do whatever he liked/likes as President, since the rules don't apply to him.

Besides, he had his fingers crossed.

And when being sworn in, instead of saying "I do" he pleaded the 5th.

Perhaps Biden should be charged with treason for working to overturn the first 2 amendments of the Constitution

Impeach him first. BTW, how’s that impeachment of Biden coming along?

...By which he meant the piece of paper on display in the National Archives.

Still there! So, no big deal.

wait, am I confused on the semantics here? Is their argument literally just:

"support" != "preserve"
"support" != "protect"
"support" != "defend"

therefor our client is not guilty?

I'll also note that

"protect" != "preserve"
"defend" != "preserve"

These rainy day strict constructionists who only want to argue about the meaning of words when it serves their purpose. The Constitution was written by (oftentimes SELF) educated men but none were linguists who parsed every potential meaning of every word the way these nutjobs insist must be done to get to the "true meaning", that is, to twist the common sensible meaning into something that supports their unpopular agenda.

OT; how come the Forum can't handle the conventional "not equal to" operator key combo (option key plus equal sign)?

This is a winner legal fight for the US. There are very few judges who will side with this argument, and I believe the SCOTUS would also not side with Dump’s lawyer here.
