From my experience in the MSM, Gannett was always shy about ruffling feathers. It was about the stockholders not about journalism. So I am not at all surprised by this.

I resemble that remark. I remember Pogo getting bullied by fact checkers too. People need to laugh with and at each other.

Might be true.

Evidently Doonesbury is no longer on the list of strips available to Gannett newspapers. According to this article, this has been a known fact for some time. It's too hard to put the story into one or two sentences.

Now of course, Doonesbury may have been dropped because Gannett found it to be constantly too liberal. Or it may have been because weekly Doonesburys are all reruns now. Or both. In any event, this particular strip was NOT censored in particular.
