Kristi Noem: dog (and goat) murderer
Posted by: hal
Date: April 26, 2024 12:50PM
[www.theguardian.com]

“Cricket was a wirehair pointer, about 14 months old,” the South Dakota governor writes in a new book, adding that the dog, a female, had an “aggressive personality” and needed to be trained to be used for hunting pheasant.

She includes her story about the ill-fated Cricket, she says, to illustrate her willingness, in politics as well as in South Dakota life, to do anything “difficult, messy and ugly” if it simply needs to be done.

By taking Cricket on a pheasant hunt with older dogs, Noem says, she hoped to calm the young dog down and begin to teach her how to behave. Unfortunately, Cricket ruined the hunt, going “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life”.

Noem describes calling Cricket, then using an electronic collar to attempt to bring her under control. Nothing worked. Then, on the way home after the hunt, as Noem stopped to talk to a local family, Cricket escaped Noem’s truck and attacked the family’s chickens, “grabb[ing] one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another”.

Cricket the untrainable dog, Noem writes, behaved like “a trained assassin”.

When Noem finally grabbed Cricket, she says, the dog “whipped around to bite me”. Then, as the chickens’ owner wept, Noem repeatedly apologised, wrote the shocked family a check “for the price they asked, and helped them dispose of the carcasses littering the scene of the crime”.

Through it all, Noem says, Cricket was “the picture of pure joy”.

“I hated that dog,” Noem writes, adding that Cricket had proved herself “untrainable”, “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with” and “less than worthless … as a hunting dog”.

“At that moment,” Noem says, “I realised I had to put her down.”

Noem, who also represented her state in Congress for eight years, got her gun, then led Cricket to a gravel pit.

“It was not a pleasant job,” she writes, “but it had to be done. And after it was over, I realised another unpleasant job needed to be done.”

Incredibly, Noem’s tale of slaughter is not finished.

Her family, she writes, also owned a male goat that was “nasty and mean”, because it had not been castrated. Furthermore, the goat smelled “disgusting, musky, rancid” and “loved to chase” Noem’s children, knocking them down and ruining their clothes.

Noem decided to kill the unnamed goat the same way she had just killed Cricket the dog. But though she “dragged him to a gravel pit”, the goat jumped as she shot and therefore survived the wound. Noem says she went back to her truck, retrieved another shell, then “hurried back to the gravel pit and put him down”.

At that point, Noem writes, she realised a construction crew had watched her kill both animals. The startled workers swiftly got back to work, she writes, only for a school bus to arrive and drop off Noem’s children.

“Kennedy looked around confused,” Noem writes of her daughter, who asked: “Hey, where’s Cricket?”

Wait, she offed both animals the same day? I guess she saved one cleaning of the gun.

Hide the cat, kids.

It's strange that we're at the point where a politician is bragging about being a violent sociopath to score political points.

Right?

This should not be "normal" in any society.

...Also, this puts her father's death in a new light. Does anyone know her whereabouts that day?

Gunners in South Dakota love canned hunts. I’m surprised she didn’t go for the goat with a high capacity clip.

Also, she's hot, and gunners cream themselves at hot chicks with guns. Big points.

Although, I'll add, they also can get quite excited at the image of a gun alone, ifyaknowhatimean.

She says in the article she also had to "put down" three horses a couple of weeks ago. All three horses had to be put down all of a sudden?

This is how serial killers start their careers.

Put down the three horses, which the family had for over 25 years, why? Put down a 14-month old dog, not even fully grown, because she was unsuitable for hunting but had a killer instinct and was untrainable and unmanageable? Put down the goat, because he was mean and smelly and acted like an uncut male goat? The horses—useless and too old to be useful. The dog—a puppy, with a puppy’s exuberance and needed a strong hand—too much time? Too much work? Not useful in her current state. The goat? Pushed the kids down and got them dirty!

Maybe Noem is what the MAGAts want, but as for me the answer is a resounding NO. Don’t want her in government, don’t want her as a neighbor, much less anything else. I feel for the kids.

It should be a felony for some people to own pets.

To put down an animal because it's an inconvenience is unconscionable and heinous.

The dog isn't suitable for hunting?

Don't take it.

Re-home the dog to someone who actually likes animals.

She hated the dog, and the dog probably knew that.

It's more likely the dog wasn't untrainable; she just couldn't train it or be bothered to work with a trainer.

Yes it does. Has Trump ever had a pet?

Ever since President William McKinley’s administration — which began in 1897 — every single occupant of the White House, save for Trump, has had a dog at some point. Over the last century, the tradition of presidential dogs became so formalized that when Scott Walker, then the Republican governor of Wisconsin, ran for president in 2016, his allergy to dog dander was seen as a liability. But like so many other political conventions, Trump turned that on its head as soon as he took office.

Asking for a friend...

According to certain lawyers of certain schools of legal / political thought, the answer is "Indeed, yes, so long as Congress does not impeach said ascendant President."

So, the VP might have to deal with, in additional to an unmanageable President, enough congressional votes to prevent a quorum.

To Rough and Tuff Country Folk™ (not like sissy city folks), animals are mostly objects - property to do with as they want. Why be sensitive about a critter's feelings if you are just going to kill and eat it anyway. It's not the Future Farmer way to get emotionally attached.

Having grown up in a deeply rural area of Iowa, I can say that I did see farmers who had that attitude, but plenty didn't. Most had this odd empathy for most of their critters - especially their dogs - while also treating them as economic units when necessary to get the income they thought they needed.

Just thinking about this again, and googling the image of a wirehair pointer, and then kristy noem wirehair pointer - I do hope that she is selected as the Republican VP.

It will be a resoundingly losing ticket. A very large swath of the same women who are pro-life and an even larger swath of suburban and urban dwellers are adamantly anti-animal cruelty and this story is just beyond anything they could conceive of.

The reality is that there just aren't enough rural folk who might feel the same way to carry a ticket like this to approaching anything other than a resounding defeat.

In addition to be frustratingly cruel, destroying an animal because it was a pain in the arse is a really outdated idea. She didn't even try to see if a rescue would take it. Face it, she was angry so she killed it. What a psycho.

I think even if the dog's actions warranted being deemed enough of a threat by most people in her neck of the woods to be put down, there's a coldness about how she describes "dispatching" the dog. This "I could legally do it, so it's okay" defense reinforces it. As others said earlier in the thread - her words show her low amount of empathy. Not a shred of "I'm sorry I had to do it, but it was necessary." I don't doubt that that low amount of empathy permeates her political thinking.

It's probably a Christian Nationalist thing; "it's OK because it's right there in official "God's" word."..

"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."

dominion noun
- sovereignty or control

It isn’t the hard things that need doing, but the right (or correct, or socially acceptable) things that NEED done. You don’t have to agree with it on a personal level, but you need to be able to do the things that we, as a people, need.

Just the ability to do the hard things don’t make you suitable for governing. So far she has shown herself incapable of doing the right things. The utter tone deafness is nauseating.
