A lawyer for the Fortson family, Ben Crump, said in a news conference on Thursday that Fortson "was the best America had to offer".

"He was a patriot. He was a US airman, special ops. He was fighting for our way of life. He was fighting for everybody," Mr Crump said."

Best possible attorney in this tragic situation. And he doesn't take cases unless he can see law enforcement @#$%& up.

The gun nuts keep telling us that people need weapons in their homes for protection -- but every time a black person feels the need to hold a weapon due to uncertainty about what is happening, the @#$%& cops kill them.

He was also holding a gun when the cops burst through the door. The cop had little choice but to empty his gun into the airman until he collapsed dead.

I can't see any circumstance where this is OK. I don't believe they identified themselves.

Again, I will say that a less than lethal disabling weapon would mean a lot in situations like the above. Why is there no such thing in this day and age?

Its almost as though guns made nobody safer in that situation.

Wow. Guy opens the door, and in less than a second the cop fires 6 rounds into him point blank. Fortson had his gun in his right hand, held at his side pointed down. When he saw the cop he raised his left hand instinctively, like, oh crap, don't shoot, then was immediately gunned down, inside his own apartment. The cop didn't give him a chance.

Why would the cop already have his gun out? He listened at the door and didn't hear anything. What kind of training do these police get? If someone was aggressively pounding on my door and not immediately identifying themself as law enforcement I might have had the same reaction. Go get my gun. Being an old gray haired senior citizen I probably would not have been shot.

Don’t kid yourself. All they see is the gun.

True that. Likely I would have made sure it was a cop before I opened the door. And then put the gun away. Even said, opening your front door holding a gun is not a capital crime. And it doesn’t explain how quickly it all went down. The cop certainly had other options to keep himself safe.

...and they had weapons out and ready to shoot, why? Lack of proper training would seem to be the least damning conclusion they'll twist their logic to reach.

Police release the body cam. All you need to know is right there. Pure murder. No reason to shoot.

The gunner was holding a gun. He could have quickly raised it and fired in close quarters. Live by the gun, die by the gun. No reason for him to be carrying unless he planned to use it. The grand jury, if it gets that far, will return a ‘no bill’.

So it's OK to shoot anyone holding a gun?

Not saying the deputy was justified in shooting, as I don't have enough info. But, if you hear someone knocking on your door saying loudly "Sheriff's Department" several times, is it wise to answer with a loaded pistol in your hand? Wouldn't you think a real deputy might react in such a way? If he thought it was an intruder, why not wait for the person to break down the door? You would stand a better chance defending yourself.

But what do I know? I tend to think about consequences of my actions. I would think twice before answering the door.

Well two versions still out there of what happened. Deputy is supposedly heard on the body cam footage saying sheriff's dept., but girlfriend's facetime with the airman has nothing about that. Just that there were a couple loud knocks on the door, no one visible through the peephole.

Apparently he did think twice, concerned that he did not see anyone or hear anything other than the banging on the door, he got his gun. What he got after opening the door was shot 6 times in the chest within a couple seconds, then told to drop the gun which was already on the floor.

Probably didn't help the airman that he was black and armed.

Experts say gun alone doesn’t justify deadly force in fatal shooting of Florida airman

[apnews.com]

Adams said beyond the body camera footage there has to be some behavioral indication that a person intends to cause deadly harm with their gun.

“We also live in a nation with more guns than people. If the mere presence of a gun were the standard for reasonable use of deadly force, we would be awash with police shootings,” he said.

The increase in gun ownership has changed policing in ways, said Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, a Washington-based think tank that focuses on critical issues in policing.

Too damn many guns. Plus this is Florida so the deputy will not be found guilty of anything.

Too damn many guns.

And too many damn racists who think being armed for self protection is fine as long as white people are doing the carrying.

100% accurate. Lots of people get pulled over while armed. Cop makes a decision to either ignore the fact that the citizen is legally armed, may choose to bring the person out of the car and even disarm them. A lot depends on how the person reacts.
