It all depends on what it is

What would you say to your 12-year old if they explained an incorrect statement like Mr. Romney explained it?

Quote

"If you look at the literature, if you look at the dictionary, the term 'saw' includes being aware of in the sense I've described," Romney told reporters in Iowa. "It's a figure of speech and very familiar, and it's very common. And I saw my dad march with Martin Luther King. I did not see it with my own eyes, but I saw him in the sense of being aware of his participation in that great effort."

Oh and if you had any doubt...

Mitt Romney went a step further in a 1978 interview with the Boston Herald. Talking about the Mormon Church and racial discrimination, he said: "My father and I marched with Martin Luther King Jr. through the streets of Detroit."

Delusional or a liar, you decide.

It doesn't matter to the mob whether a Romney marched with MLK - the holiday season is upon us

and the liberals are hungry for blood sacrifice.

It only matters to you if the other guy lies, is that what you mean?

Sort of like the right-wingers were with the word sex about 12 years ago.

Wow Comandanta Blankenship, excellent response. And right on topic.

If you are going to used dumbed-down stereotypes, CB, at least get it right. Conservatives are the ass backwards people who believe in blood sacrifice.

Taken at face value, it's a reasonable explanation.

"2007 was the year that saw the housing market go from bad to worse", etc.

Things like the acceptability of little white lies, or withholding information, or taking liberties with accuracy can be very culturally bound . . . not everyone is going to have difficulty with Romney's FOS-ness . . . it's not like being overtly and proudly FOS was any sort of liability in 2004, or 2000.

His father never marched with King so I guess he was using "marched with" in the figurative sense as well.

And to be fair and balanced, h', being FOS wasn't a liability in 1992 or 1996. I have hope that things might be different this time, because it seems people are getting sick of pandering fools like Mitt and Hillary.

So how was Bill Clinton FOS?

What would I say to my 12-year old?

1) It all depends on what the meaning of the word "saw" is. grinning smiley ... but seriously, does anyone actually believe that he means what he's saying here?

2) Well, Romney is the same guy who said he was basically FOR equal rights for gay couples, but then came out (cough) later and insisted on the 'sanctity of marriage' (cough). [rodonline.typepad.com] ... he's the biggest flipper there is!

3) Hey, what do you expect from someone who makes a used car salesman look like a straight man?

So how was Bill Clinton FOS?

You can start with the "I didn't inhale" business and finish with the "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" b.s. I'm sure somebody with a Clinton fetish will be more than happy to point out more examples.

Things nobody really had any right to ask him in the first place.

Do these things remotely compare to the layers of deception we've all grown so comfortable with in our current administration?

C'mon now h', you are taking brofoski's answer and twisting it into a hijack of the point of the thread. It is not about whether GWB is more FOS or better/worse than BC. From the original post, the replies flowed to your asking "h': So how was Bill Clinton FOS?"

You asked a good question in this thread's context. Don't attack the response/responder just cause you didn't like his answer. Geeze, he didn't even bring up "Slick Willy" or "It depends on what the meaning of is is." (see subject title) in his response.:-)

Oh, hey mom. Sorry I haven't called. Not sure about next Tuesday-- I'm already committed to going to a friend's in the city in the evening, and that's a lot of driving for you.
Have you been taking all of your blood pressure meds?

If i were an idiot and explaining to the 12 year old that a statement can only be correct or incorrect, I'd slit my wrists.

I'd explain what "I have a dream" is all about, including the basic premise of all men being created equal (except for those with the black and white genetic defect).

The original question was what you'd say or ask someone of that age who, given the circumstances, put forth such an assertion?

The sort of explanations that I give my children is as follows:

"Kids, do you know when a politician is lying ? When his or her lips are moving."

It's important, especially at that age, to impress as much reality as you can.

Tis a broad brush rustbelt wields. Problem is it leaves the kiddies thinking jury duty should be avoided along with voting or (gasp!) any other form of public service.
