Mitt Romney 2008 - heh

Angered that his name appeared on a press release touting a gay pride parade, Governor Mitt Romney moved yesterday to curtail the activities of a 14-year-old advisory commission on gay and lesbian youth.

The commission chairwoman, Kathleen M. Henry, said she was called yesterday by Beth Myers, the governor's chief of staff, who told her that the governor planned to issue an executive order ''revoking our existence" and creating another youth commission whose purview would be all of the state's youth, not just gays and lesbians. The commission would have all new members, she said.

What's the problem? Did they retain a commission on just heterosexual youth?

Must be the Massachusetts water that causes all the flip-flops, eh?

Mitt the Pitt is a sleeze, you cannot believe a word that comes out of his lips... I've said it before, I'll say it again: he's a used car salesman. Well known up here for speaking out of both sides of his mouth.

Edit: oh, and this is one of many of his Achilles' heels. The other major one being the Mormonism...

The report said this: The release, which described the celebration of "gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth and their supporters,"

I guess I'm going to show my age. Back in the old days, gays were often called "@#$%&." Is there a different current definition or did they just toss in both "gay" and "queer" to cover all bases?

Michael, this should answer your question:

[en.wikipedia.org]

Edit: also, read this:

Excerpt:

"In 1994, while running against Ted Kennedy for the US Senate, Romney assures the Massachusetts Log Cabin Republicans that “as we seek to establish full equality for America’s gay and lesbian citizens, I will provide more effective leadership than my opponent.” (Remember, that opponent is Ted Kennedy. Romney gets the endorsement.) During his 2002 gubernatorial campaign, Romney operatives distribute bright-pink fliers at Boston’s gay-pride festival that read: “Mitt and Kerry wish you a great Pride weekend! All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference.” Two years later, during his speech at the Republican National Convention, Romney likens the threat from same-sex marriage to the menace of Islamist terrorism."

PeterB-
Thanks for the links; I think I figured it out!

I wonder how far Romney will get in 08? Those gaffes are the type of thing that might or might not catch fire with the public. I think several of those are meaningless (price of the subway), but the polygamy thing might cause some problems with the hard religious right in the Republican party.

The specific mention that "Romney likens the threat from same-sex marriage to the menace of Islamist terrorism." was suprising. If this [www.washingtonpost.com] is the speech, I'd suggest that the statement is a bit of a stretch! He does introduce the notion of us being under attack from a variety of sources, including terrorism, and then lists a variety of ways in which we "step forward" to combat them, including heterosexual marriage. But, it will be interesting to see if other candidates go after him with that and whether it has any traction.

Michael, I don't know...

He starts off by saying:

"America is under attack from almost every direction. We have been attacked by murderous terrorists here in this great city. Our employers and jobs are threatened by low-cost, highly skilled labor from abroad. American values are under attack from within.

Hard work, personal sacrifice, education, integrity and the foundation of family have been and always will be the source of our strength.

Throughout our history, when our country needed us, Americans have always stepped forward, standing up to every challenge. That's what our parents generation did on the beaches of Normandy. We must step forward again today."

then just a little bit later:

"We step forward by entering marriage before we enter parenthood.

We step forward by expressing tolerance and respect for all God's children, regardless of their differences and choices.

And at the same time, because every child deserves a mother and a father, we step forward by recognizing that marriage is between a man and a woman."

More on the subject:

... the point is, he's really a hypocrite (or a liar). On the one hand, he's saying we "should express tolerance and respect for all of God's children, regardless of their differences and choices", but on the other, "marriage is between a man and a woman", which is hardly a tolerant view. Likewise, he openly endorsed "equal rights" for gays, then later turned around and made it clear that he doesn't endorse gay marriage. This hypocrisy is ironically most evident as regards his Mormonism: "I believe marriage should be between a man and a woman... and a woman... and a woman." (Ironic, isn't it, that *this guy* is telling us that marriage should be between a man and a woman?) It's one thing to be a hypocrite; it's another to joke about or revel in it. As I've said before: this guy is a used car salesman, and you should trust him about that much-- that's about how much we trust him up here. (Actually, I'm being insulting to the used car salesmen!)
