Is this a normal thing people do? Or is it forbidden somehow?
And what's the deal with the post office-- normal hours tomorrow, right? Why was the deadline extended through the 17th?

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.

because the 15th was a saturday, and not a federal IRS workday.

it's always extended when the 15th falls on a saturday or sunday.

my location post office has extended hours on tax day and workers outside physically taking the return from your hands as you drive by. this probably varies by locality.

don't know about certified. i've filed electronically for years with never a problem.

I always sent mine regular old first class mail before the days of e-file.

The deadline is the 15th or the Monday after the 15th if the 15th is on a weekend.

You're allowed to send it by certified mail.

your return must be postmarked by the filing deadline, which was extended this year because the normal dealine fell on the weekend.
i have never had a problem with the return getting lost in the mail, so certified mail would be a waste of money.
how old are you, you don't this basic high school civics class stuff?

If you want to be certain, send it Certified with Return Receipt Requested (green card). You write your address and the IRS address on the green card and the IRS signs it and mails it back to you. Keep it in your files "forever". It's all under $5 and worth it if the IRS scares you the least little bit.

I do it now and see lots of other people doing it.

Ask the PO all about it after tomorrow when they are less busy. It's a good thing to know for lots of things: IRS, collection agencies, child support, alimony, etc.

The IRS won't give a rat's ass whether or not you use certified mail. If you don't owe anything, they won't even give a rat's ass whether or not you file on time.

My state will happily fine you if you file late and don't owe them anything. They want that $40 fine, and no excuse will get you out of it.

you can get something like a proof of mailing. it's stamped by the postal worker and it's a lot cheaper than certified.

G'man, do you mean a certificate of mailing? The IRS accepts those only to verify the data of mailing if the postmark is unreadable. If the return is lost, the IRS won't accept the certificate of mailing as proof of mailing the return on time. Weird, I know, but that's the policy.

'tis done. I decided to send it with a 38 cent stamp. A mailman friend stopped by and grabbed it, so I know it's at least more secure than in a mailbox.
I will be sure to raise this topic at parties and during awkward pauses on dates for the next 11 months.

RacerX, the reason they fine you is, that the states don't get any money until the Feds issue it to them.

I always use certified mail with receipt. Makes me feel good to know they got it and I have proof I mailed it on time.
