QuoteMrNoBody OWC THUNDERBOLT HUB includes a 20V/5.5A psu. But that doesn't matter as the old Elgato devices are USB 2.0 power compliant. iow, they don't need external power! Running USB thru a hub is inviting all sorts of conflicts, especially with such an old device. MacBook Air M1; You do know EyeTV is a 32-bit app, right? What app are you trying to use with the M1? Elgato sold the EyeTVby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Quotejdc Is the hub plugged into the wall? Or is it used as a pass-thru power for the MBA? It is a pass-through hub made by ZMUIPNG.by rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
QuoteGareth Sounds like you just need a powered USB-C hub, or a powered USB hub with a USB-A to USB-C adapter. I'd get the adapter (they're cheap), then test it with the USB hub you're using with the iMac (are you using a hub with the iMac, it's a little unclear if you're doing that or plugging it straight into the iMac). Or, maybe with the adapter, you can just plug it straight into the Airby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Quoteanonymouse1 Sounds like you want a dock that fits into the MBA-there a plenty of powered hubs…. Yes, I need a dock because the app pops up a window telling me to use a powered hub as the one I have doesn't have enough power. The coaxial cable from Verizon FIOS plugs into the EyeTV Hybrid and then it has a USB connection that gets plugged into the Macintosh. Works on my iMac directly intoby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
I can't seem to find anything on Amazon, Best Buy or OWC. I am trying to connect an EyeTV Hybrid to a cable to watch TV and record programs. Apparently, the hub I have is not powerful enough to run the EyeTV Hybrid device. It works on my desktop iMac (Retina 5K 27" Late 2015 model with 32GB of DDR3 memory and AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4MB). Yet, it will not work with a MacBook Air M1, 2020 mby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
JDC, LOL!! I hear you. I am not a Zoomer, but I understand that what I think is important at my age (54) differs from that of a 22-year old. If someone wants something and I am getting them a gift, I should try to get as close to getting them something that they want and can use for the purposes. Yet, I don't want to break the bank either. Again, not my child, but the child of a friend wby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Rich In Distress, Not sure I saw pRON's advice on this subject, but I think for the money, I will either get the 2020 mid-range Pro over the Air. Appreciate all that have chimed in. This has been helpful.by rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Filliam H. Muffman, Fascinating. Just when I think it can't get more confusing it does. Yet, I feel like I can't go wrong with anything made in 2017 or later for her purposes. Her parents aren't working at the moment. So, anything will help her out. This is also good information for me, since I may soon need to be in the market for a newer laptop as my 2015 isn't going to be any newer goby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Fritz, Does your Air have a Broadwell chip or Skylake? Seems like that may be my problem with a late 2015 Pro that is using the Broadwell chip. Same as how the 2020 Air has a 10th generation Intel chip and the Pro has the 8th generation. I have tried twice now to make the video background with Zoom work and it will not even give the option. It can only do a still image background So, I thby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
JDC, Yes, in some ways the MacBook Air is better. However, as I said in the opening sentence: "... but then I was told that the MacBook Airs have an inferior chip that won't allow a person to use Zoom with video backgrounds. Something about them having Y chips instead of U chips." I did not understand that at first and what it meant, but the article Drew posted, madeby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Filliam H. Muffman, Yes, that extra $800 is a REAL downside. I am looking at the happy middle. Not the entry level one, but not the top of the line one either. If I avoid the i3 and stick with an i5 or i7 and multiple cores, then anything newer than a 6th generation Intel chip should be able to do all basic computer chores and easily handle Zoom or Skype video streaming or corporate confby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Sekker, Both should easily fit inside of a backpack. If she didn't want a portable, I feel, for the money, she'd be better off having me buy her an iMac.by rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Carm, Very interesting. I just went back and tried it again with my MacBook and even with a green screen, it can only do a still background image. No moving image or video in the background at all. I was ready to assume that it was a Windows only feature and not something we can do on Macintoshes (or at least not on MacBooks). I was reluctant to install it and try it on my main machine (aby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Drew, WOW!! Excellent. That article was perfect, it made it clear that the choice for her is the MacBook Pro. Thanks for sharing that link.by rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Carm, Thanks. Maybe I should have made this a poll. The MacBook Pro seems to be winning.by rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
JDC, Thank you. She said the company she will be working for prefers they use Zoom for work from home situations. FaceTime seems to work well and doesn't seem to be a resource hog, but not everyone has Macs. So, FaceTime is not a work option for her to be able to do large group collaborative chats. Looks like anything older than a Gen 6 Intel chips should work. The infamous they are sayinby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Sarcany, Thanks for the quick reply. This isn't for my own child's graduation. So, i wasn't trying to get carried away with a gift. The base model was $999 (less with an education or government discount). So, this is a step up from base. I also figured the smaller drive didn't matter too much since she could always buy a portable USB drive as big as 4TBs for under $100 to expand her storagby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Was about to buy one of these for a college graduation present, but then I was told that the MacBook Airs have an inferior chip that won't allow a person to use Zoom with video backgrounds. Something about them having Y chips instead of U chips. I think this might be true since I used my MacBook Pro (early 2015) to see if Zoom would work and it did with still image backgrounds but would not workby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
WOW!! Thank you all. Zip drive is on the way from an eBay seller and I still do not have the 3.5" floppy drive yet. I might still have a Bronze keyboard G3 Lombard 333MHz Powerbook, but with no battery and no power cord, I have no way to see if it will boot. It used to have modules that acted like a DVD/CD player, Zip drive and even a floppy diskette I think. Need to get to my dad's attic tby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
The floppies have two holes at the bottom. The Zip disks are all of the 100 variety.by rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
All, Duh!! Thanks. I see one external USB Zip drive for sale on eBay. The Amazon listings are crazy expensive. Not willing to pay $200 for one of these. Do I then need to run this in a virtual window? I mean I can't see how it is going to read data off of a zip disk or floppy that may have been formatted in OS 7, 8 or 9, if I am now running OS X. Do I need to download an emulator? Or if iby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
I was cleaning out an elderly relative's house and discovered a bunch of boxes of floppies and Iomega Zip disks. I don't have any old Macs. The iMac I am using right now is an old late 2015 version that is now running 10.13.6 (High Sierra). I have nothing SCSI or any parallel ports. Not knowing what is on the disks, I don't want to just throw them out. Might be old family photos or letters, or soby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Digby, Thanks for the tip. I may try it at an upcoming preseason hockey game.by rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Ztirffritz, LOL!!! Mia Khalifa. That was an interesting tour of photos. Hmmm. I had no idea she was a D.C. sports fan. Thanks for that.by rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Pat, Thank you. Some of those could work, but none are the size I need and if I blow them up, they will be horribly distorted.by rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Archipirata, Thank you. That last link was the closest to what I am looking for. I guess I should have stated that the image needs to either clearly be a hockey crowd but not close enough to see the jerseys they are wearing, or a close-up of the crowd, but having them be in Washington Capitals jerseys. Sorry about that. The Russian and Polish crowd would not work for this diorama. The Redby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
I have an unusual request and was hoping some of the avid semi-pro and pro photographers would know how to help me look. I am not sure if the embedded photos will show up here. So, if not, you can look at the link here for a picture. I am looking for a hockey crowd photo to use as background for a ice hockey rink. The photo should be approximately 50" long by 15" tall. PeterW, What is it that I want to know that the cardiologist didn't already bore me with? Well everything. LOL!! I am a naturally curious person. It is not every day that I get to see inside my body. So, seeing arteries and valves and how they open and close and know that it is my heart is neat to me. Obviously nothing was too bad about either test since they have let meby rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
Sarcany, Thanks for that tip. I have had GraphicConverter for years. Good to know.by rapayn1 - Tips and Deals
