Quotehal I don't know why, but this laptop got lost in the shuffle one or two moves ago. It's just been sitting around - I just found a power adapter and boot the thing - I can't believe that it still works. It was last booted in 2010 and it made horrible sounds when it first kicked into gear - I assume the DVD drive was grinding on old bearings... I found two batteries - one unused, but theyby Buzz - Tips and Deals
Clone is good, now working on High Sierra update(s). Will look for toggle app, but I don't recall it's specifics, other than it puts an icon in the menu bar that lets you toggle, or select dynamic GPU switching. The problem is, that when you select "Integrated Only", it allows some apps/webpages to override that selection, w/ the developer stating that if it didn't do that, the MBP woulby Buzz - Tips and Deals

Doing the Target Disk Mode to USB 3 clone thing for now..... looks like about another hour and a half to 1:40 to complete. Then we'll test and start the High Sierra update, go to bed, and hopefully wake up tomorrow to a viable SSD.which we can transplant into a workable laptop for the other human..... gotta keep her away from my M1 MBA, otherwise who knows what gremlins she'll let get in there.by Buzz - Tips and Deals
Doc, I did install a toggle app that forces it to use the integrated GPU as much as possible, but occasionally something on a web page pops up and invokes the discrete GPU. Sometimes I catch it, like on the Wordle page, and toggle it back ASAP, while other times I'll miss it, and it KP's. Typing is hard enough, so I try to keep the manual dexterity intensive tasks to a minimum..... especiallyby Buzz - Tips and Deals
I would like to clone the 1TB SSD from a 2010 MBP that's suffering from the well-known GPU issue (w/ the KP causing bad cap in its discrete GPU). Running El Cap on SSD that has ~220GB of stuff on it, and I'd like to clone it onto a 500GB SSD, then update that SSD to High Sierra before transplanting it into another 2010/11/12 MBP that has a fully, properly working GPU section in it. As long (moby Buzz - Tips and Deals

QuoteZoidberg QuoteArticle Accelerator So it would seem you had a corrupted local metadata store. I'll go with that. Seems like the kind of thing that DiskWarrior used to excel at fixing. I miss that program. Get ye an olde Mac, DW will still work. ==by Buzz - Tips and Deals
QuoteRAMd®d I ended up using an inexpensive USB DAC adapter plugged into the small USB hub we have connected to the dock. It’s an easy-peasy $12 solution, that works great. Does this limit volume control to that on the speaker(S)? That's what happens with my Audioengine D1 DAC connected to my 2012 mini. The DAC then has a volume control that handles all the audio out the system woulby Buzz - Tips and Deals

I’m at my infusion clinic now, so I don’t have access to my M1, but I ended up using an inexpensive USB DAC adapter plugged into the small USB hub we have connected to the dock. It’s an easy-peasy $12 solution, that works great. I’ll update with links when I get home later today. ==by Buzz - Tips and Deals

QuoteAcer Visited the eye doc yesterday and got good news, bad news: Good News: Nearsightedness has improved! Bad News: Because lenses are hardening with age on the journey to cataracts sigh. What's your good news/bad news about your silver years? Deja vu. I, too, visited the ophthalmologist yesterday w/ eerily similar results. Good News: Farsightedness has improved! QuoteSpiff So I’ve always wondered: why did the band always have evil looking album covers/artwork? Skulls, snakes, swords, etc. Their music does not appear to reflect their artwork. Somewhat of a disconnect. Any thoughts on why this is? Edit: take it back. Just looked it up on ol’ Wikipedia. Their album covers feature swords, due to their hard rock edge. Not sure where I got the skull aby Buzz - Tips and Deals

QuoteZoidberg ...... For the rare on-the-go moments, I just unplug the MagSafe and the Thunderbolt cable (and an audio plug; the only thing that Gemini is missing) and go. * I have a lot of backup for many reasons (work, primarily). Use a dock w/ M1 MBA here, can't imagine using it w/o a dock. Our older MBP's have ample ports, but any new MBP would definitely get docked! ==by Buzz - Tips and Deals

Thanks. Haven't done much yet since finishing the "tune up", other than a bit of surfing and some Excel data updating, but no beach balling so far. Fingers crossed. Just makes the unresponsive keys more annoying. No joy w/ keyboard swap from same form factor 2010 MBP? BTW, HDD is from April 2015 manufacture, so probably <8 y.o. of in use. Been awhile since I compared HDD speeds, but would a 1TB, 5400 RPM, SATA 2 HDD, on a SATA 3 bus have any reason to be slow? 2012 15" MBP, 16GB RAM, 2.3GHz i7; Toshiba HDD tests OK across the board, but MBP occasionally throws a pregnant pause wile looking for something, beach balls and all, then carries on as if nothing is wrong once it gets its bearings...... until it happens again.
