I take it back!by sekker - Tips and Deals
Hey, Larry. I have a clearly defective RunCore SSD drive - want to take it apart and look for Spectek parts? It is certainly a candidate for using subpar components (was a very, very flaky SSD).by sekker - Tips and Deals
What if the entire car was designed in America and manufactured entirely elsewhere like an iPad?by sekker - Tips and Deals
Quotebazookaman does anyone make an optical/hd replacement thing for my old MacBook 2,1? Check out the OptiBay - that's what I used for this 2007 MBP. Oh, and keep in mind that not all SSDs are the same. For example, OWC SSDs have 7% capacity reserved for performance optimization and long-term reliability. Not sure about the OCZ lineup, but they have a good reputation right now in the fiby sekker - Tips and Deals
I'm running SSD-boot drive, HD in optical bay solution in this Santa Rosa MBP. The battery life has improved over the straight hd/optical drive setup. Not really sure why except that the SSD uses less power, and the hard drive only spins up when accessing. Oh, and the optical drive doesn't keep turning off and on with no disc in it!by sekker - Tips and Deals
I'm very pleased so far with this OWC 120GB SSD. Ran less than $250.by sekker - Tips and Deals

I've had nothing but problems with time changes and calendars on my iPhone and Macs lately. Even the location mapping often fails. Seems like a real glitch in the latest software.by sekker - Tips and Deals
I thought the entire purpose of the Zune line was so that the Gates' children could have an mp3 player that wasn't made by Apple.by sekker - Tips and Deals
I've found a true use for an iPad that is not replaced by a laptop - reading grant applications. It's very nice to load up thousands of pages on the iPad, and then have my review files loaded up on this MBP while reading the files on the iPad. Reading these 8x10 documents was best on the iPad. Composing written descriptions was best on the laptop.by sekker - Tips and Deals
I had an awful experience with eBay/Paypal years ago, enough that I refused to reactive my account when offered to do so. My wife does everything instead. She likes to shop for all sorts of one-of-a-kind things and is willing to tolerate its quirks.by sekker - Tips and Deals
The issue is sharing your keynote files with others using office.by sekker - Tips and Deals
QuoteJEBB If you don't need to make any changes to a presentation in PowerPoint, export that keynote file to PDF. It will work just fine as a presentation in that format on a PC or even on a Linux box. I use PDF format to distribute slides to the students for a class I teach. Agreed - that's how I solved this problem today. This is an amazingly bold and direct attack by Microsoft on Apple.by sekker - Tips and Deals
I just ran into this problem today. If you export a keynote file for powerpoint, the latest patch on office has broken the ability to open many (but not all) files. Here's a link to a recent thread: This impacts Office for Mac AND Windows. I had someone here update office 2003 (windows of course) and they can no longer open a powerpoint file (made from keynote) that works fine on unpby sekker - Tips and Deals

I doubt it will be updated soon. If anything, it'll get an i5 mobile chip and be forgotten again by Apple for 2 years. Not a lot of love shown by Apple to the mini over the years.by sekker - Tips and Deals
Why shortchange the cameras? Apple's being foolish.by sekker - Tips and Deals
Once gas hits $4 a gallon again, these cars are going to take over a major segment of the market.by sekker - Tips and Deals
QuoteJimmypoo >>>As a FW800 drive, I'd give it a try. That's pure lunacy. Firewire 800 max's out at 100MB/sec, THEORHETICALLY. SSDs are throwing 2.5x that data to it. Why would you spend that much money when there are REALLY GOOD SATA drives that can throw close to 100MB/sec worth of data? This is like a 427 in a Mustang with go-cart wheels and tires. Quotehal Quotesekker One of the reasons I went to an SSD was that using one as an external USB drive on this MBP was FASTER than the internal, 7200 rpm laptop drive two years ago. This can't possible be true - the max throughput on FW800 is around 80mb/s - max throughput on USB is around 40mb/s and closer to 25mb/s on models before 2009. Slow SSDs do 100mb/s, fast ones 250+mb/s does not cby sekker - Tips and Deals
One of the reasons I went to an SSD was that using one as an external USB drive on this MBP was FASTER than the internal, 7200 rpm laptop drive two years ago. As a FW800 drive, I'd give it a try. SSDs from our sponsor come with a 30day money back guarantee. I'd give it a try.by sekker - Tips and Deals
Got it. Great, and thanks. Hopefully it can convert some of the more recent DVDs that MTR and Handbrake choke on.by sekker - Tips and Deals
I think it all depends on your workflow. I do a lot of projects using Keynote. Being able to rapidly open and rapidly survey between 100MB files is a big deal to me. And I do work with a lot of different applications. SSD also provides a surprisingly nice speed boost on browsers. The bottleneck in 90% or more of my work is either drive speed or me. If I'm doing a project that's CPU limiby sekker - Tips and Deals

Just came back from the Apple Store, where I took one of the latest 15 MBPs for a test drive (4GB RAM, 750 GB HD, anti-glare screen). List price - $2700! 1) The anti-glare screen is essential for me. I could not even read the text on the screen on the glossy one. As usual, check this yourself before buying. But I'm glad Apple is offering this option. 2) The machine has a quad core i7 procesby sekker - Tips and Deals
10.6.1 on Dell mini10 10.5.5 on a dual core pentium HTPC The mini needs a good home - broke and needed warranty repair. By the time it came back, moved on to a MacBook and never looked back. The trackpad is the mini10 Achilles heel. The HTPC got replaced by an ATV2 plus streaming via iTunes. I's still used to play DVDs from time to time but normally it is off. Used to be used everyday.by sekker - Tips and Deals
QuoteKen Sp. Quotethermarest QuoteKen Sp. Can I replace the optical with a SATA 2.5" drive for non system storage? Yes. Put a 2.5" SSD of whatever size you want in the optical bay and keep your spinning hard drive. Can I boot to that? Is it SATA? I am buying the new MBP, and was thinking the other way---Your way makes more sense--any other thoughts or pitfalls from anyone? Orby sekker - Tips and Deals
Having 3G on your iPad can make that a terrific device - especially if you don't own a smart phone. In the end, I have 3G for home, and have access to a wifi model for work. I take the 3G on trips when I can even tho I have an iPhone. It gives me flexibility.by sekker - Tips and Deals
