Disable iCloud Desktop & Documents sync. (It's slowing down your Mac and your Internet connection. It may be useful as a cloud backup, but the CPU/drive overhead and potential complications with multiple Macs AND the potential privacy issues are solid reasons to just say "no.")

With my old desk, the lock was "cam" style -- secured by a narrow nut that screwed on over subtle threads on the inside-side of it. It appeared to have grommets going into the face of the drawer, but they were just there to sink a little into the wood to keep the lock from shifting. Maybe talk to your vet about Prednisone/Prednisolone. Steroids often hurt the kidneys over time and can mess with the immune system, but if she's old and otherwise in good health -- and can make regular trips to the vet to monitor kidney-function -- it might be a fair compromise to ease her last few months or years.
