Frustrating freezes - 14 years ago

This is really getting on my nerves. My MDD continues to freeze: specifically, the curser is frozen, can't force-quit anything, and the only remedy is to restart via the power button. If there's a common set of circumstances that precedes the freezes, I haven't found it yet. Sometimes it happens during the course of working, and other times it happens when the computer is idle for some time.

Quotechas_mProb just a permissions problem. Just repair permissions and restart, see if that does the trick. Tried repairing permissions but no joy. I'm starting to suspect it has something to do with th Palm syncing program The Missing Sync. I e-mailed Mark/Space tech support with a full description of the issue but have not heard back from them. Phoning them is not an option, unfortunately

iSync dead after archive & install - 14 years ago

After doing an archive & install (from 10.4.8 to the same version) on my MDD, iSync won't start up. Specifically, it bounces in the dock and never opens. Have I forgotten to do something after the archive & install? Thanks!

I believe it's the full install disk. I did check the size of my home folder and it's nearly 60 gig -- way larger than my available space! Thanks for that hint. I'm backing up my home folder now, then will trash it, and try the install process again. If that fails, I'll be back again looking for additional help. Thanks to all --

My MDD currently running 10.4.8 has been freezing frequently (cursor freezing, can't escape, requiring my holding down the power button) so I decided to do an archive and install of Tiger. I inserted the original Tiger 10.4.3 install disk and restarted, only do discover that the "archive and install" option is grayed out. There's more than 30 gig of space available on the startup disk.

Quotechas_mAnd you can't just erase the hard drive and reinstall Windows because ... I can't erase the HD and reinstall because 1) I don't have administrator privileges, and 2) I don't have the Windows software to reinstall. I will, however, look into the "cleaner" software suggested by others here.

Clear personal info from PC - 15 years ago

How can I best clear personal info from a PC? I'm ending a temporary assignment that forced me to use a PC laptop running Windows XP Professional. While I've not entered any credit card numbers, I have entered passwords to access my personal e-mail and other password-protected sites. And altho I've not visited any embarrassing, x-rated or career-ending websites, it would be nice to get rid of

I got my domain name through GoDaddy and have been using them as my email host because they offer that as a free service for one address. However, I could use more storage space than they offer in the free package (25 mb) because I need to keep certain messages on the server so I can access them from several off-site computers. A final thanks to all you helpful, generous people. Now that my heart rate's back to normal, I will make good notes about all the advice received. I'll also keep FileJuicer and Text Wrangler handy, and will remember the tip about importing into non-word processing files. Exhale.....

Just downloaded File Juicer, dropped the doc in the box and is says there's nothing to juice! OMG, does this mean the file is toast???

Whoa -- gotta take a deep breath. I finished a Word doc for a client, hit save, heard the friendly chime, then my computer locked up, specifically, the mouse stopped working. I restarted. No dialog about anything needing to be recovered. Clicked on doc but got message saying that "Word cannot open the document, make sure doc is a valid Word document." The original Word icon appeara

Thanks for the info regarding the number of dots, and that it doesn't necessarily match the number of characters in the password. That allayed my concerns. In the meantime I'm now able to sync without a problem -- perhaps the server was temporarily down and I panicked prematurely. I appreciate the help.

Hi, chas_m -- Thanks but I did try that already. That's the window in which the longer password (more dots) keeps reappearing after I type the newer (shorter) one.

Okay, now I'm really confused. For some reason my .mac account won't sync anymore, saying that the password is invalid. So I successfully changed the password and am able to log into .mac via my web browser (where you can change account settings, passwords, storage limits, etc.) but still my .mac won't sync when I use iSync.
