Thanks all for the data points. Based on a G4/700 being enough, I'm planning to go with a G4 tower. A mini would be nice, but costs more than the G4 + SATA, and I don't think a FW400 connection will gracefully sustain heavy, multiple access. The ability to use groups of internal drives will be a huge cost and size advantage both initially and over time. I'll be careful about throttling. I payby EEMac - Tips and Deals
I'm trying to set up a home file server. I used to have a dual G5 in that role, but it was massive overkill for what I needed, and I sold it. Here's what I want to do: 1. Run Transmission as a bittorrent client. 2. Serve video files and back up over the home network. 3. Back up periodically to an external drive. 4. Run leopard to make #3 a no-brainer. Most of this time, the server shoulby EEMac - Tips and Deals
I want to encourage those of you still on the fence to buy a MacBook Pro. I bought one about two weeks ago, and I am in love. It's the best computer I've had since I bought an original iMac. Impossibly, it's faster than my dual 1.8GHz G5, both for general use and for Unreal Tournament 2004. Using VMWare Fusion, I can run Windows apps when I absolutely HAVE to for work. And I can finally take allby EEMac - Tips and Deals
Let me get this straight: Disney: "Some rides that have been in near-continuous use since 1963 are being refurbished." The reporter: "Fat people did it, right?" Disney: "No, the rides were due to be refurbished." Reporter: "Of course they need to be refurbished! It's because of fat people that are fat." Disney: "No, we've been patching the flumeby EEMac - Tips and Deals
Hi - I'm trying to integrate everything onto one computer under one set of software. I have a bunch of personal and work email archived, as well as personal and work email contacts. The problem: my personal and work email are on separate servers. My personal contacts should ALWAYS get mailed by my personal account. My work accounts should always get mailed through my work account. I can setby EEMac - Tips and Deals
I've got the 24" Soyo and absolutely LOVE it. My particular monitor does have a synchronizing bug - it has to be turned on twice to display the screen. But for $300 for a 24" screen with true 8-bit color, it's quite the bargain! I'm very picky about LCD colors - see some of my previous posts about CRTs vs LCDs - and the color on this is (just) good enough to leave CRTs for.by EEMac - Tips and Deals
Thanks for all the good advice! It's from Wegener Media, which has certainly been in business for a while. However, posters are correct that the putative 90 day warranty is probably not worth the $400 difference between eBay and "refurbished" _to me_. (I have no experience with Wegener products, refurbished or otherwise.) I'll check eBay and a few other sites before purchasing. It soundby EEMac - Tips and Deals
Hi all - I'm considering purchasing a MacBook Pro for work. I'm looking at purchasing a refurbished (aka "used with 90 day warranty") 1.83GHz for $1180 which I'm pretty sure is a Core Duo. The low purchase price and matte screen are powerful draws for me. My other option is a $1700 refurbished MacBook Pro from Apple, which is a 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo. Is there a compelling reason tby EEMac - Tips and Deals
I'll second the mention of the Xerox 6180N. The output on this thing is GREAT - roughly every other time I print out a web page, I rave about how much I like the output. I don't know if it's the new toner or the genuine postscript, but I'm very, very, very happy with the output quality. Yes, it's $500. But you're getting $500 worth of printer (for 2007). Also, the Lexmark E250d reports &quby EEMac - Tips and Deals
I really like mail.app from Panther (OS X 10.3): standard mbox storage, clean aqua look, life is good. Mail.app in 10.4 rubs me the wrong way - so much so that I won't use it. I've tried copying mail.app from an old Panther installation, but it doesn't open. I see the "icon zooming bigger" animation, and then nothing happens. I'm still in the Finder. Is there a way to run mail.appby EEMac - Tips and Deals
It's doable. I can't comment on performance as I've never tried it myself. Good luck!by EEMac - Tips and Deals
Hi - I much prefer the interface (and standard .mbox storage) of Mail from Panther. However, when I copy the app and try to run it in Tiger, it just bounces and then stops. No window, no launched application. Is there a way around this? I'm stuck in 10.4 due to my love of OmniWeb. Thanks - EEMacby EEMac - Tips and Deals
"Having extra stuff, especially if it is lacking in sentimental value or exemplary beauty, is a burden." - GREAT line. One offer at $100 is a lowballer. A bunch of offers at $100 is telling you the market value of the furniture. We're in much the same position. Our cellar flooded recently and we lost probably 20 boxes of books and "stuff". As we went through it, I realizby EEMac - Tips and Deals
I had a similar experience with a down matress pad. Costco had great prices, and we wanted to sleep extra-well, so we bought down pillows, a down comforter, and a thick mattress pad. Was it comfy? Oh, yes. My head sank into the pillow and it was like...I don't know...being hugged by an angel? (or hugged by a duck) Anyway, I found myself waking up sore and tired. My best guess is that the beby EEMac - Tips and Deals
Apologies to those for whom this is a duplicate post; I'm seeing if there's more input available on this board than umm...the "other" one. I'm getting a new monitor for my G5. I'm using a 17" Mag CRT that tops out at 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz, but it's a real eyestrain at that low refresh rate! Having used higher-resolution monitors, I want the highest resolution I can get for a max ofby EEMac - Tips and Deals
Considering the ink won't evaporate or clog when the printer's waiting for the next job, that's a heck of a deal.by EEMac - Tips and Deals
Dave, regardless of the situation, it sounds like you're being a good friend to the guy. You're obsessing because you want to solve this for him. However, you have already done everything you can and should. Remember that it's his problem and not your problem. (I'm making that point because if it was your problem, there'd be things you could do to fix it. With it being his problem, it's outsidby EEMac - Tips and Deals
Holy cow! I paid $600 for a 6180DN less than six months ago. I'd requested color samples from Xerox. (There's a place on their web site to request print samples; highly recommended!) The 6110N was in the running, but didn't have duplex. For $180, though, that's a darn good buy on a printer with excellent color output. If I hadn't bought the 6180 already, it'd be worth it just to have color outby EEMac - Tips and Deals
As cbelt3 mentioned, the reason top loaders are popular in the US is basically...because top-loaders are cheaper to make, so that's what appliance makers produced. Top-loaders are cheaper to purchase initially, especially for a large-capacity one. My front-loader was billed as "large capacity" but it's not. It's fine for our household, but for a family with a lot of kids that would bby EEMac - Tips and Deals
I'm really, really happy with my Phaser 6180! I don't do a lot of photo printing though. I'd say it's near-inkjet quality for the ones I have printed. Flesh tones are a bit weak; I'm sure that's fixable but I don't have the color knowledge to do it. The glossy toner looks great on plain paper. You can request a free print sample to see the quality. I agree about the excessive eye candy in X. I'd love to run a stable OS 9, keeping the sane finder, the proper font rendering, a professionally-chosen mouse response curve and the blazing UI speed! But at the same time, I have to admit X is doing things 9 couldn't dream of without a serious under-the-hood rewrite. OS 9 was limited to 2GB files IIRC. I download and burn 4GB - 8GB DVDs in OS X qby EEMac - Tips and Deals
Hi all - I'm considering purchasing a Mac notebook. I'm having to do a lot of work at the office, on the work laptop. (Windows or Linux, enjoy!) A refurb MacBook is a good fit for me in terms of cost, size, and durability. However, I can't hang with the glossy screen. Hate it, hate it, hate it. Is there a company that makes matte overlays for the MacBook? I've googled but with no luck.by EEMac - Tips and Deals
My friend is running Windows 98 on a PC he bought in 2000. Not surprisingly, his computer is dying. I'm sending him an older G4 tower mac. I'll pre-install Panther or Tiger for him. He has a bunch of old emails and photos stored on AOL, probably in an older version of the AOL software. He's still using AOL. (Yes, I still want to help him.) How can we move his AOL info over? He's not locby EEMac - Tips and Deals
