Does AT&T Fiber have synchronous upload/download speeds? I don't live in an AT&T area, but some of my co-workers do. In our extended WFH reality, many of them still need to bump up their Internet service. I have Fios gigabit service myself. I get 980 MBps up and down. I couldn't live without it.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
I have an M1 MacBook Air order that was promised to ship this week. No news yet. I imagine the demand for the laptops is a lot higher than for the Minis.by Silencio - Tips and Deals

The Aricebo facility wasn't obsolete by any means, but repairs from the previous cable failures were deemed too expensive/difficult, so they planned to dismantle it in a controlled way. It's a tremendous loss for astronomy. There's only one other facility on Earth similar to it, based in China. I read that there are plans to build a new facility in Puerto Rico to replace it, but I don't know iby Silencio - Tips and Deals

Scissor key LEADER! The 2012 MBPs are still popular because they can be upgraded to 16GB of RAM, the internal SATA port is 6Gb/s, and the GPUs don't blow up like the 2011 models did.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
I used to go to the West Coast Computer Faire every year. A fascinating trade show for a nascent industry. Wish I still had some of the Apple swag I picked up back in those days. My dad contemplated getting a CP/M card for running WordStar, but he settled on some other word processing and spreadsheet options.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
Jeez, Forrest Gregg also passed away fairly recently. That Super Bowl Wyche took the Bengals to was so aggravating — a definite non-classic game until the final drive, where everyone in the room was nervous except me: "It's Joe Montana: we've got this!"by Silencio - Tips and Deals
I like Canon for color inkjet AIOs, but stick with Brother for monochrome laser AIO.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
Welcome back, Kap! I've been in the same boat: social media burnout and a busy life overall.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
I almost completely forgot he played Endicott in Benson. He was a great foil for Robert Guillaume, much like he played Father Mulcahey as the straight man in MASH. RIPby Silencio - Tips and Deals
Thanks, all. Much appreciated. It's been an interesting year. Lots of changes, including a couple I never foresaw myself doing in a million years, but overall positive steps that I believe will bear fruit for us in the new year and beyond.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
QuoteYoyodyne ArtWorks Cool, you share your b-day with Mr Mojo Risin! And Sinead O'Connor, as it turns out. Thanks for the birthday wishes, folks. I'm still out there, as always, watching my daughter grow up and keeping a fleet of Mac Pros (both towers and trash cans) running at peak efficiency.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
Sadly, $2,500 is not an outrageous amount of money for an audiophile turntable these days. New, inexpensive, decent quality turntables are not a common item these days despite the much hyped LP renaissance. And the old Thorens in good condition go for a lot more than $200 nowadays. I bought my somewhat more humble Dual 721 in the mid-90s, and even that has appreciated in value in the interveniby Silencio - Tips and Deals
Long Island City was already gentrifying rapidly. The area is currently served by the 7, E, M, and G trains, as well as a LIRR terminal and various ferry stops. Seems like a lot of options, but they're already mostly operating at capacity. Andrew Cuomo is giving them $1.5 billion in state subsidies. Wish he'd spent that money improving said public transit infrastructure instead.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
The Quadra 840AV was my daily work driver back in the day. Nice machine. For a while I had one of those Apple Adjustable Keyboards with the optional floating numpad. They looked great, but had a mushier typing feel than the classic Extended Keyboards did, so I didn't stick with it for too long. Is that one of the GeoPort modems on the far left of the spread? God, those things were awful. Tby Silencio - Tips and Deals
Homelessness, mental illness, addiction. These are national problems we are expecting municipalities to fix. No wonder they're not getting fixed.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
Well, I sure picked a day to come back and poke my nose in. So many memories of so many people no longer with us, you remain as always in my heart. Even you, Mintie! :pby Silencio - Tips and Deals
Better to have the GPU than not have it, IMO. That said, I got my wife a 2015 15" rMBP with only the integrated graphics and it's been great so far, but she doesn't regularly use any applications that would greatly benefit from the GPU.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
I switched to IINA a while ago. Should give VLC another shot just for fun, I guess.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
They still film pretty frequently in my neighborhood, and their main soundstage facility is just down the road. We've even seem Noah Emmerich (Agent Beeman) in the neighborhood a couple of times. The last season was a bit weak, but the characters and the dilemmas they face are pretty engrossing.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
I didn't realize how much Ive was involved in the design and implementation of Apple Park until the flurry of press and interviews starting hitting over the past couple of months, most of which featured Ive talking at length about the design and build process in his inimitable way.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
At home celebrating my 10th birthday and watching Monday Night Football. The sad news really put a damper on all the festivities.by Silencio - Tips and Deals

At least the top two signs have good tracking. The CAPS LOCK sign is looking a little loose there.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
Quoteztirffritz Did they trash the iTrashCan? Apple already said they are developing a new "modular" Mac Pro to replace the trash can. Hopefully it sees the light in 2018, but who really knows. The iMac Pro is a bone to throw to the professional audience in the meantime. Personally, I'm still a bit torn on it — where most of my designers would do just fine on a modern iMac, mostby Silencio - Tips and Deals
It'll be interesting to see what you get by connecting to ethernet. If your network administrator is remotely competent, the ethernet ports will have a VLAN assigned to it, tied to its own subnet. If they want to keep that subnet isolated, they won't make it routable to the other subnet(s). Likewise the wireless LANs are on their own VLANs, and it doesn't appear there is routing enabled between tby Silencio - Tips and Deals
Something like a Nvidia GTX 970 is a good upgrade over the Radeon 5870, especially if you want to work in 4K. I haven't tried any of the new Pascal cards in a Mac Pro yet, but they pack a lot of performance in a more efficient package. The GTX 1070 should be a pretty solid performer. You would just have to live without the Apple boot screen and have to deal with Nvidia web drivers that every Aby Silencio - Tips and Deals
Twist-O-Flex is still a thing? Who knew? Doesn't look bad at all on an Apple Watch. I definitely had one as a kid. I was well over it by the time I hit puberty and arm hair started becoming a factor.by Silencio - Tips and Deals
