Well hmmmm on the not plugging in.... maybe that pin array was an Apple bit, I dunno. In terms of trusting it - as an extra backup drive, etc, would expect more than just fine. If you download Softraid and run the free trial - can do a certify on it which will also give some peace of mind that it's good or call it out for real issue.

Unfortunately - no way to normal mount the volume without the SSD part of what was a Fusion drive. now - you could run a data recovery app against the 2TB - as long as the volume was not encrypted - if there is data you need to recover. Otherwise - if you just want to use the drive for storage, no reason at all you that you shouldn't be able to initialize the drive and then have use of it.

That photo is a SATA drive no question. The right edge connector looks like it's got a piece possibly broken off which may impact how those edge pins align in? Question - is the Pulse/Oxygen feature on the replacement still enabled? Apple got sued for a patent infringement and disabled the feature in watches starting in mid-January. In future this can be reactive via a software update once Apple solves this matter. Consider a pipe supplying water at a constant rate to a system that is using it a variable rate. A capacitor is like a water storage tank.... when there is a higher demand 'surge' than the steady in supply, it covers that peak and then 'refills' when demand is back under the supply rate.

APFS is the best choice on MacOS for SSD. HFS+ way to go for HDD except where forced to APFS. APFS is horrible for HDD / physical location management and leads to major performance reductions as things are edited/duplicated/modified from original file states.
