I advise our customers to buy it and run it once or twice a year. We use it EVERY DAY round here, and we charge customers $65 to do so (assuming that's the only problem, which it generally is). That's 2/3rds the price. It's a good investment that will last you longer than the computer you're running it on most likely. BUY IT.by chas_m - Tips and Deals
Yet ANOTHER journalist who doesn't want to write about Apple's success, so he searches hard for any sign of weakness/failure/softness. Where are these people WHEN THE SUBJECT IS MICROSOFT?? HMMMM? Anyway, either Steve is psychic, or when he referred to the AppleTV as a "hobby" a few months back at the D5 conference he meant it. In our store, the Apple TV sells fairly well, mostby chas_m - Tips and Deals
Your argument should be "there is nothing in your application that denies the need for consistent controls." The rep is using a more-frequently-heard-lately line of BS that goes something along the lines of "it's hard, so I don't have to explain it to you."by chas_m - Tips and Deals
mattkime is correct. You have added some software that is causing sleep issues. This could possibly be consistent even across new user accounts if it's something (like *shudder* Norton) that is installed for all users. Go to your Account panel and have a look at your Login items. Delete anything that isn't Apple. If the problem goes away, add items back in one at a time over a series of days tby chas_m - Tips and Deals
I *love* the Web Gallery. Seriously. My one complaint is that I'd like to be able to set a default background colour on the page instead of black. To remove photos from a web gallery, you have two options: 1. Remove the photo from the web gallery in iPhoto. It should re-sync. 2. On some occasions (like if you're trying to remove all of them and start over), iPhoto will not re-sync corby chas_m - Tips and Deals

Given that an 800MHz G4 Mac is at least four years old now (and possibly up to six years old if we're talking about a single-proc tower), then I would have to say that Apple is WELL within its rights to make Leopard run only on that model or faster. Leopard isn't MANDATORY for people on older machines, and the updated OS *is* a legitimate way to encourage people to buy new Macs. If they werby chas_m - Tips and Deals
AAA: You're good at something. If this job ain't it, then you're cheating your employer AND yourself. I would, if nothing else, look into taking a leave of absence for a short time to decompress and refocus. Your chest is already trying to give you an excuse to take some time off -- if you don't, you may very well end up on permanent vacation. Let's not do that. Tell the VP that you're nby chas_m - Tips and Deals
Dignity? I can has dignity? Lafinfil is GENERALLY acting as Larry's rep, that's true. In this SPECIFIC instance, however, he overstepped that authority. GENERALLY I think lafinfil does a good job. In this SPECIFIC instance it crossed over into attempted censorship, and IMHO needed to be challenged so as not to set a precedent. PS. Since this started, my blog has added the following contby chas_m - 'Friendly' Political Ranting
I enjoyed playing with the new Nano. I kept wanting to put ham on it and stuff it in my mouth, but I had to admit the small video screen looks GREAT. I really don't understand that effect, all I know is that it WORKS. I must confess, however, to being a bit worried about Steve's seeming obsession with thinness of late. HE had to lose some weight because of the cancer he beat (WHEW!!!) so now aby chas_m - Tips and Deals
The lack of a real video card probably will mean some Core Animation effects aren't available to you, but I suspect you'll easily meet the minimum spec. You're missing more from not having 802.11n than you'll miss out on in Leopard. (as an example of what I mean by missing out on some Core Animation effects, I have a C2D BlackBook and when I run Keynote there's one transition effect -- flamby chas_m - Tips and Deals
Download Safari 3, Firefox and Flock. Try em all out. I suspect Safari 3 will work fine. I used to have a list of sites that didn't work right with Safari 2. All gone.by chas_m - Tips and Deals
Quotejohn dough1) What is a good (meaning not cheap) case for the iPhone? Prefer non-leather, as rubber or silicon lasts longer, and, IMHO, provides better protection. After just keeping the thing in my pocket for a few weeks, I finally felt the need to address the very slippery backside of the iPhone with this: I'm perfectly happy with it. The iPhone needs a LOT less protection than peoby chas_m - Tips and Deals
VERY jealous RevKev. Beautiful time to go. Wales is the "undiscovered country" of the UK for most tourists. Hope you have a great time, and put up a web gallery if you're a .Mac member!by chas_m - Tips and Deals
Please take your time and do the RAM upgrade carefully. It's easy to forget to plug everything back in -- the Intel Mac mini is considerably more difficult to upgrade than the G4 version as far as RAM goes. Enjoy your machine -- other than the lack of video card (same prob I have with my MacBook, but it's only the minorest of issues), I think the minis today are great little powerhouses.by chas_m - Tips and Deals
I will use my credit toward a new iPhone -- in Canada -- when they have a deal there. My lucky, lucky wife will get my "old" iPhone, and I'll get the now-standard 8GB model. Win-win for us, win for Steve, win for Rogers and/or AT&T. Everyone actually wins!by chas_m - Tips and Deals
FWIW, I like what I've seen of Torchwood so far very much indeed. X-Files never did it for me, hated MEN IN BLACK (very cute premise though), but this is fine *and* dandy (as Carlin might say). Looking forward to the Sarah Jane Adventures too (kind of the other end of the scale from Torchwood).by chas_m - Tips and Deals
Quote$tevieGo read the TOS and see how many times they refer to their "sole discretion". This means they can do whatever they like, and you agree to those conditions by posting here. Yes, Larry can do that, since he's the owner of MR and its forums. You're right. My point, however, isn't about Larry. It's about lafinfil. He's a moderator. His duties are pretty clearly spelled out,by chas_m - 'Friendly' Political Ranting
I agree with everyone who said DAMNATION THAT IS GOOD TELEVISION! Cuz it was. Creepiest thing I have seen on TV since ... must resist Cheney joke ... since Sapphire & Steel! That one put me AND the kids I was showing it to behind the sofa -- particularly impressive as our sofa is against a wall! The kids who saw it were scared ... er, witless ... and to this day all I have to do is pby chas_m - Tips and Deals
QuoteestnycFairport Convention, Chas. DOH!! Thank you estnyc. I stand corrected. I didn't think many people knew about FC, or SS, or Amazing Blondel or any of that whole genre of Englishe Musick (heh). My snobbery is slowly being whittled away.by chas_m - Tips and Deals

QuotetestcaseCan the high speed EDGE data connection on the iPhone be used via Bluetooth to use a MacBook's larger display? The idea of viewing the internet regularly on a 3.5" screen really doesn't appeal to me. No. But you have completely misjudged the experience of viewing the internet on a 3.5" screen. Please allow me to clarify the "extra $20 for unlimited internet" bit: The iPhone offers three monthly plans when you activate. All three INCLUDE unlimited Internet/email/data. They are priced at $60, $80 and $100. They vary only in the number of minutes (talk time) and the number of SMS text messages. I remember a BBC documentary on American lotto winners. The overwhelming majority were now broke, miserable or both. Managing money is a JOB. Managing a lot of money is a BIG job. It requires skills and finesse and education. Most people don't have as much of these qualities as they think. I happen to have won a small amount (really, about $5K) in a lottery game a while back. karsen is right that if news of this spreads, the homeless population will grow (not "skyrocket" -- it's still NO FUN being homeless, you know!). However, if San Fran wasn't one of the very few places where such sensible plans were enacted, that would counteract the effect and the homeless population would probably remain level or even drop. For the record, the current European avby chas_m - Tips and Deals
You don't need a life manager. You need to quit. Or at least threaten to quit. Find a boss or higher-level person who respects you (hopefully that is the VP who keeps "volunteering" you), and show them a list of some of the complaints you've put down here: 1. 88-hour work week, often 80 hours plus. 2. I have to compliment all the posters in their thread on the mature, insightful and eloquent postings on what some might easily consider an inappropriately "political" topic. It has restored my faith that a fair number of people here understand the difference between discussions that could have political aspects, and "political discussions." He's a genius, but I can only take his voice for so long. Love his work though. He started off in Steeleye Span, married Linda, produced incredible albums with her, divorced her and did some even more incredible work, he's a bit "hit-and-miss" these days IMHO but he's an unqualified treasure of a songwriter.by chas_m - Tips and Deals
Wow, thanks for the report!! We have sent them many drives from our store, most came back 100% but a couple (to our astonishment) came back with no hope. We have always thought very highly of them and consider them the ONLY option for Mac HD recovery when things are really bad (we do a fair amount of recovery work ourselves if the drives aren't totally dead). Let's hope nobody here everby chas_m - Tips and Deals
