Nascar car-mounted cameras use a roll system of clear-film over the lens that can be remotely advanced when it gets dirty from track dirt, debris, oil, etc. Kinda like a motor drive advancing a roll of clear film over the front optic via remote (or timer?) Sounds like a pain to engineer this type of system for your use, though.

Good comments, thanks all... Gonna explore the idea further, other users seem to swear on mac-like reliability but looking for more data points and real-world useage from full-time users. I was hoping the 4gb ram modules would come down to earth by now, to make the iMac a slightly better proposition for now. Hmmm.

I saw 2 full car carriers on the freeway today loaded to the gills with the the Camaro. Black & yellow were the only 2 colors on either carrier. Long live the V8.

Architecture & Landscapes benefit from wide to ultra-wide lenses. People/sports/macro not so much. I have a stellar 14-24 lens that doesn't get used much, but when I need it, I need it. Hate to haul it though.

I would be concerned about putting the laptop in a bag or case w/o removing the card, or I would be concerned about forgetting to remove it. Not good design, you should be able to keep removal media inserted fully in a full-size portable in my perfect Apple world. Damage awaits the forgetful user who tosses the Macbook in a case. </disgruntle CF user>

A slight rattle and you consider a wholesale move from Nikon? Silly. My D700 rattles too, and has performed perfectly over 20,000 captures. My Canons had weird issues in the past, and my Nikons do too. It's under warranty, just go take pictures.

Adobe DOES allow upgrades, just not a boxed, retail version. Adobe wont sell you an older version, your only hope is an up-sell to a standard (non-edu) licence of CS3, but I bet CS4 is in your future. Done thru support only. Gotta call.

I think you will need to call Adobe and ask nicely. 800-685-3658 IIRC, you will need to pay an upgrade from edu CS2 to professional CS3 version (not including the upgrade you have already purchased). Your edu serial # will not work with your CS3 upgrade as is. It might be cheaper to buy a full, current edu version of CS4, or at least skip CS3 and upgrade to CS4 if your going to pay agai

I'm not a big fan, either. The refresh page icon has been baked into the far right side of the menu bar, no way to make it a button again over with its peep on the left. And the "Top Sites" grid is an eye-candy resource hog.

What do you plan to do while there? You need a car to see the bay area. If you an urban type and plan on downtown-ish only, you might do without. Gotta drive north, south & east of SF proper to really "see" the area.

I revert to CS2 for animated gifs. I think I have every version of PS from 7 on up still installed. Some plug-ins and features only work with the older versions, hence the software pack-rat mentality. HD space is cheap.

I grew up with Kung Fu, and am saddened by the news. Kill Bill was the perfect antithesis role for David, Bill being the long-lost evil twin brother of Caine that he never had. Perfect casting and an awesome performance. Loved Kill Bill & look forward to the prequel & sequel Tarantino has in the long-term works. This might change some of that. RIP, David.
