QuoteA-Polly Hi Kiva, don't know if this will be useful info for you or not, because my monitor is pretty new* and I only have one. However, I plug the monitor into a Thunderbolt port on my MacBook (using the one on the right side next to the HDMI port) and while at my desk I don't have to use the charger and cable at all — the laptop keeps its charge from the monitor (which is of course pluggeby Kiva - Tips and Deals
one more.. do the 3rd party chargers + cables work or should I only buy apple? It would be nice to not have to take my charger home and back. thanksby Kiva - Tips and Deals
thank you, folks...this makes sense now. Much appreciated.by Kiva - Tips and Deals
is it redundant to get something with a SD card reader and a few other things one wouldn't use? That price tag is steep.. is there a better option. What, exactly, is a "pass through" hub? Is there a more affordable price point for something that will also charge the machine vs. just a peripheral expansion?by Kiva - Tips and Deals
Greetings.. Thanks to the great folks here, I was able to make a quick decisions ad ended up with a 14" MBP. My previous machine is a 2015 MBP, so I'm trying to get caught up on USB-C/TB4, etc. I will be bringing the machine back and forth from the office to home, with stations setup at each location. Previously, at one location, I had an, extra apple charger, a backup 2.5" TM dby Kiva - Tips and Deals

well, Costco only had Space Gray so ordered silver online. Should be here tomorrow or Th. We'll see.by Kiva - Tips and Deals

last I was active here, I worked for a much sh!ttier school. Super Anti-mac. I've since changed employers. I sent a list of 3 machines to them after doing the above post, progressively lower in price. They responded within 30 seconds saying, "you're getting this one" and linked to the top option. Very different public sector experience. They manage their $ and people well here.by Kiva - Tips and Deals
Thank you everybody for your responses. This has been incredibly helpful. I think I'll roll the dice and order now vs. waiting until next announcement. I think the 14" is a nice in between size for me and isn't too big. I looked at all my typical apps, and it appears everything comes in 64 bit. Thank you for that reminder, as it made me make sure MacJournal has a 64-bit version (by Kiva - Tips and Deals
Hi Folks, Was active here back in the before kids days...not so much anymore. So, i'm hoping the collective wisdom of the group can help me shortcut my research process. My employer is offering to buy me a laptop. They're not flush with cash or anything (public sector), so they asked that I approach them with a low cost option and the "ideal" option. Greetings, Ok, this doesn't google well so apologies if it's so simple...but in Big Sur Messages..when sending a text, i have to hit enter 2x to send which inserts an additional line in the message. Doesn't happen every time...just frequently. No idea why. Anybody? Just me?by Kiva - Tips and Deals

QuoteSpeedy You work for the IT folks, not the other way around. I have to remind my teacher wife of this from time to time. serious...the IT here is so bad it's a running joke, apparently. It was a act of congress to get them to open up the IMAP option for me at all. They also did so saying they would not support anything for me without a renegotiation of their contract and increase in feby Kiva - Tips and Deals
QuoteSarcany QuoteKiva Ideas? Log into Gmail (webmail) and check the settings for yourself. It's the G-suite and I don't have access. I have full webmail access through gmail. After requesting that they allow me to access (they need to turn on IMAP), they conceded. I had outlook and apple mail access for a short while, but then it went down. That's where I am. It's super weird...by Kiva - Tips and Deals
So, I was able to get my new job to convince the PZ Nazi tech folks to enable IMAP, etc. access for my account. Worked great for a couple of weeks. Then, it stopped a couple weeks ago and hasn't worked since. I still have calendar access, which is weird. Doesn't appear I have contacts access. I've tried deleting the account in both outlook and mail and adding it back and no dice. Just givby Kiva - Tips and Deals
well, not sure how or why, but they caved. IMAP enabled and I'm in business.by Kiva - Tips and Deals
another update...they pretty much are refusing to enable the IMAP feature to allow email client access. They are citing a need for a 'policy change'. I have told them that I would require no support - just access. They claim there would be additional costs involved (?). They guy I spoke to was unaware if, in the g-suite, one can enable IMAP on a user by user basis.by Kiva - Tips and Deals
update....I was able to log into the domain and now have wifi access. However, big pushback when asking to get outlook or mail.app set up. "this may violate the terms of our support contract with the school". Keep in mind I've been very clear that, once allowed access, I will require no support from them. This AM at admin meeting the IT guys were there. The IT guy said he needed boss admin authorization to allow my laptop on the network since it's not their laptop (reasonable). The funny part was when he said, "you know, macs don't play well with windows." If it wasn't my first day, my answer would have been, "I know, that's why I want to use my mac." Instead I just tby Kiva - Tips and Deals
yes, i'm going to connect with the other mac user and see what's up. yes, there is no ability to put in an app password in mojave when setting up a gmail account. I am using the current version of mojave.by Kiva - Tips and Deals
QuoteSarcany 1. Outlook does support Gmail, but it's not all there yet. Better to use Apple Mail. 2. Unless you're running an old version of the Mac OS, you don't need to enable "less secure apps," but your admin may well have turned on the security setting requiring app-specific passwords as rjmacs suggests. Try that first. well, in mojave, there doesn't appear to be any place tby Kiva - Tips and Deals
Hi Folks Thanks for the feedback. My deal is that I don't like the gmail web interface. I like having all my email in one place (multiple accounts which, strangely, are all gmail now but others are personal) and seamless with my mac. I'll look into the app specific password for mail.app. I do have the 3rd party access enabled in the gmail account settings and it says macOS and outlook haveby Kiva - Tips and Deals
Hi Folks After a stint in private practice, I'm back working for the man and, apparently, a new set of PC Nazis. At the staff retreat, one fellow staffer saw me with my MBP, approached, me, and commisserated with me on how they only support PC and chromebooks here, he's glad to see another mac guy, etc. Basically, we're on our own. so, my boss says no problem getting another printer. However, he noted that whatever we get has to be something IT has nothing to do with since it isn't coming from them (e.g. they'll get pissed). So, I was thinking an all-in-one brother with wireless and ethernet capability? It could still go on the network and my office mates can print to it and I can print wirelessly? Or should we just alby Kiva - Tips and Deals
QuoteRacer X Why are IT depts so petty and controlling? When I became a contractor and IT interfered with me doing my job in a timely manner, I started billing to their overhead for all wasted time. My "boss" approved my invoices. After a few months they caught on, and realized that in my contract it was a gray area, and the higher ups told IT to just figure out solutions as neededby Kiva - Tips and Deals
Quotegabester QuoteKiva Parallels may be a good option for when I'm out and about without an ethernet connection and need to print. That or go back to circa 2005 and pack a big ethernet cable with me everywhere I go. Fun. As another alternative, do you have a coworker who could install something like Google Cloud Print and share the office printer through that? Or share the wired connectiby Kiva - Tips and Deals
